FIELD STUDIES COUNCIL Epping Forest Field Centre OCR B GCSE Geography Course Options OCR B GCSE Geography Course Options For teaching from September 2016 Epping Forest Field Centre is a purpose-built non residential centre located in a terrific Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Area of Conservation that provides excellent learning opportunities. It has excellent transport links and is only a few kilometres from the M25 and M11 and from Loughton Station (Central Line for London Underground Services) and Chingford Station (rail services from Liverpool Street Station). The Centre is managed by the Field Studies Council on behalf of the City of London, and was established to commemorate the European Year of Conservation in 1970. FSC Epping Forest Field Centre delivers the City of London environmental learning service in Epping Forest. Our new courses are designed to fit the criteria of the specifications for first teaching in 2016. As such they are designed to incorporate a number a qualitative and quantitative core geographical skills that students are required to understand. These may include the use of GIS using ArcGIS software and/or Field Network Systems. Our courses are designed to meet the criteria of OFQUAL by offering human and physical experiences in the field as a minimum of two fieldwork days. There will be an opportunity to visit Loughton to measure the impacts associated with flood events in the town and observe how river catchments may be managed. 2c Our Natural World Topic 1 Global Hazards 1.1b How can Weather be Hazardous? River landforms of the River Roding Drainage Basin Students will investigate the formation and characteristics of river meanders at Loughton or Debden Brook. There will be an opportunity to compare the meanders with a straight channel section to observe the differences associated with these contrasting landforms. If time permits there will be an opportunity to observe and profile the V-shaped valley in the upper course. * 2c Our Natural World Topic 3 Distinctive Landscapes 3.2a What influences the landscape in the UK? Loughton Brook * is available September to April. NB: water levels early in the season can be very low. Debden Brook is available throughout the year. NB: you will require transport all Woodland Ecosystems – Epping Forest Epping Forest consists of a mosaic of habitats resulting from its use as wood-pasture. Students will visit Epping Forest to investigate the interdependence of abiotic and biotic components. A comparison of the abiotic factors including the geology and soil in two different woodland ecosystems will be used to observe the contrasting abundance of plants. Students will consider how particular conditions influence the characteristics of the ecosystem. 2c Our Natural World Topic 4 Sustaining Ecosystems 4.1a Why are natural ecosystems important? Counter-urbanisation and suburbanisation of the rural environment in London’s Greenbelt Students will investigate the causes and consequences of population growth visiting two contrasting settlements to measure differences in housing age, service provision and environmental quality. 2c People and Society Topic 5 Urban Features 5.1.
