ELECTRIC TRACTION VEHICLES
MODERNISED ELECTRIC VEHICLES
DIGITAL CONTROL SYSTEM FOR
TRACTION APPLICATION (VCU)
VCU is a digital control system for control, regulation, measuring, sequencing, protection, supervision and communication tasks for retrofitted (modernized) locomotives. It has been successfully used in applications such as
modernization (thyristorization) of old diode locomotives. VCU allows easy
designing of a particular traction application because of a wide range of
hardware modules available and flexible programming. VCU has been successfully certified in exploitation and continuously improved and extended by
new features.

• 25 kV, 50 Hz
• 3860 kW
• 120-140-160 km/h
Customers: Croatian Railways, Railways of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbian Railways, Macedonian
Railways, Romanian Railways, Turkish State Railways
The thyristor converter for locomotive electric traction-motor drives is intended
for the replacement of old diode converters.
At minimum cost, a diode locomotive can be turned into a modern thyristorcontrolled with superior traction and exploitation characteristics such as:
• Continuous speed and torque control of traction motors (traction and braking),
optimizes adhesion, saves energy, prolongs the life of vital parts and provides
electronic protection against overloads, sliding and torsion vibrations.
• Sequence control of thyristor bridges limits the reactive power.
• Use of the existing, proven and reliable electro-mechanical and electronic sets
and parts decreases repair costs, maintenance costs, facilitates and spare
parts needs.
TECHNICAL DATA
KONČAR - ELECTRIC VEHICLES Inc., upgrades electric
locomotives as well as other electric vehicles such as
tramcars, electric multiple units and others according to
the specific requirements of the customer.
Upgrading proceedings involve the employment of the
most recent technological solutions for such main subsystems as:
• main and auxiliary drive electronic converters
• micro-processing control systems
• air conditioned and ergonomically modelled driver cabs
Any upgraded electric traction vehicle is brought to a
higher technological level resulting in:
• exploitation and maintenance cost reduction,
• enhanced reliability and availability,
• better working conditions.
For the sake of rationalization, general overhaul of a
vehicle is generally performed within the frameworks of
modernisation.
Any upgrading programme comprises all functional units
of the vehicle, while the solutions applied provide for an
optimum cost-effect ratio.
KONČAR performs type and serial tests and inspections of
electric vehicles and equipment as well.
