The Energy Policy Act of 2005 is a statute that was passed by the United States Congress on July 29, 2005 and signed into law by President George W. Bush on August 8, 2005. The Act is intended to combat growing energy problems. Included in this Act is new legislation pertaining to Mercury Vapor Ballasts. The Act reads: “Mercury vapor lamp ballasts shall not be manufactured or imported after January 1, 2008.” By law, lighting manufacturers cannot manufacture or import mercury vapor ballasts after January 1, 2008. In response, WESCO permanently ceased shipment of all products containing Mercury Vapor ballasts on December 15, 2007. Mercury Vapor lamps are not affected by this legislation, and will continue to be offered for sale by OEM lamp manufacturers for use with existing Mercury Vapor product. To replace Mercury Vapor lamps, the following lamps are recommended: • Metal Halide • High Pressure Sodium These products are available through WESCO Distribution. WESCO experts are available to meet with you to discuss these alternatives and the needs of your facility. Contact WESCO at leadershipinlighting@wesco.com for your free facility assessment.
