Hulett girls Written by Vanessa Armstrong It is hard to believe that we are already a quarter of the way through 2016 and what a roller coaster start to the year it has been! Despite the demise of the rand, the very serious lack of rain, and the list of ongoing challenges that our country faces January turned out to be a record month for our sales’ team! It just goes to show that property is, and always will be, a great return on your investment. I was recently reminded of how privileged we are to reside at Brettenwood. Not only do we possess a magnificent vista to admire... but while sitting at my desk one day, I was fortunate enough to catch sightings of our blue duiker, witness our family of mongooses with their new born litter crossing our lawn, hear the guinea fowl and observe a fish eagle as it swooped on it’s prey. Later that night I came across the most majestic Spotted Eagle Owl and couldn’t help but feel a sense of innate pride – it was almost as if our dad was watching over us. I may be biased but Brettenwood continues to show us that this is the way and place to live. Further evidence could be found in abundance over the holiday season, where our clubhouse and pools were packed daily, being enjoyed by our families, young and old. You have to try esteemed chef Jackie Cameron’s mussel recipe on page 19. With our fine weather and access to the most delicious mussels right here on our doorstep, this dish is sure to become one of your favourites. We’d like to congratulate our Home and Country team members, Pete & Jody and Greg & Jackie and welcome their two little girls to our Brettenwood family. May little Scarlett and Bella fill your lives with joy, love and laughter. As we go to print we say goodbye to our Editor Nikki, who leaves us to go on maternity leave. Nikki was thrown into the deep end with our magazine but has proved, like the other St. Anne’s girls (page 50), that hard work and perseverance pay off. Well done on a fantastic issue. From the four of us girls we hope you enjoy the latest edition of our magazine and may the year ahead bring you prosperity and reward. ‘’A great attitude becomes a great mood, which becomes a great day, which becomes a great year, which becomes a great life’’ Author unknown Hulett Sisters (from left to right): Carren Emary, Colette Scruse, Vanessa Armstrong and Joanne Jackson. 4 | BCE MAGAZINE BCE MAGAZINE | 5 Estate Contacts HULETT DEVELOPMENT COMPANY CEO Vanessa Armstrong vanessa@brettenwood.co.za Director Mike Armstrong mrarmstrong@mweb.co.za General Manager & Development Project Manager Gary Botha 072 802 3428 | gary@brettenwood.co.za Finance Manager Alvinesh Sookoo alvinesh@brettenwood.co.za Message from the Sales Administration Veloshnee Reddy veloshnee@brettenwood.co.za Grounds Manager Norman Barter 082 655 2211 BATELEUR CONSTRUCTION Manager Gary Botha 072 802 3428 | gary@brettenwood.co.za Security Manager Nathi Mdhluli 081 015 9529 | nathi@brettenwood.co.za HABISCAPE LANDSCAPING Manager Morgan Lynch 082 716 3557 | morgan@brettenwood.co.za Administration Kristy Bamber 082 640 0109 | kristy@brettenwood.co.za Gatehouse Security 073 872 3818 | 032 525 3100 Internal No.: 3100 Professional Snake Handler (Neville Wolmarans) 082 561 4969 Personal Assistant Penny Woolridge penny@brettenwood.co.za WILD PEACH MEDIA & TECHNOLOGY Manager Graeme Bromfield 082 923 6088 | support@brettenwood.co.za Marketing Nikki Chennells 081 041 5020 | nikki@brettenwood.co.za Support & Accounts Trisha Govender 032 525 3109 | support@wildpeach.co.za HOME & COUNTRY PROPERTY Sales Director Peter Cameron 083 796 9999 | peter@brettenwood.co.za BRETTENWOOD HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION BHOA Chairman Keith Anderson 082 553 0373 | keith@brettenwood.co.za Umhlali Police Station 032 947 9900 Sales Advisor Shavaun Lindsay 072 194 8672 | shavaun@brettenwood.co.za BHOA Estate Manager Ross Bishop 078 019 9779 | ross@brettenwood.co.za SAPS Emergency 10111 Sales Advisor Greg Simmonds 084 515 7464 | greg@brettenwood.co.za Administration Samantha Subban 032 525 3101 | samantha@brettenwood.co.za Marine Safety (Ballito Lifeguards) 032 946 8000 Sales Advisor Michelle Larkens 082 775 3998 | michelle@brettenwood.co.za Finance Officer Priehesan Naidoo 032 525 3101 | priehesan@brettenwood.co.za Ballito Emergency Services 032 946 2711 Electricity Supply 032 437 5081 Apologies to Cleo Marangos Pools CC for the incorrect contact details in the November 2015 issue. Piling on the balance of 31 units is all but complete and construction on the first 10 units is well under way. All things being equal, Bateleur Construction is set to commence with the hand-over of these units during the last quarter of 2016. Written By Gary Botha, HDC General Manager & Development Project Manager GENERAL NEWS As at February 2016 there has been a significant jump in construction activity throughout the Estate with over 30 Free Hold homes and 47 Sectional Title units under construction. This is a very promising sign as homeowners look to engage with Brettenwood, converting opportunities into beautiful homes of high quality and enduring value. The Hulett Development Company (HDC) and Home & Country Marketing and Sales Teams have settled into their new home at 152 Falcon Crescent. Come and visit them, enjoy a cup of coffee and chat to them about how they may assist you with all your Brettenwood property needs. DEVELOPER UPDATE Our Brettenwood Homeowners Association (BHOA), a new homeowner’s first contact with the estate, have gone a long way in making the architectural review process substantially easier to understand and work with. We hope this will help guide new owners and their design teams through the process with a lot less frustration and stronger communication. Forest Village Phase 2, ERF 241 The final Forest Village Phase 2 units have been handed over and we will continue with the final snags and de-snags process to ensure that we have delivered on our quality goals and objectives. The site controls and building protocols have also been updated and are being enforced. We believe that with the current high levels of construction activity within the Estate, this will encourage owners and their contractors to be mindful of the safety aspect and the impact of their actions. Forest Village Phase 3, ERF 240 As seen in this picture, the first 3 units of 34 are now completed and occupied. The Sectional Title Register is open and the first batch of Real Rights has now been transferred to the new owners, which marks a significant milestone. The bulk earthworks, storm water controls, primary retaining walls, electrical, 6 | BCE MAGAZINE Forest Village Community Centre As the final phase (Phase 3) of the Forest Village Retirement community is being implemented, we have taken the opportunity to work with the Forest Village committees to get the Community Centre upgraded to suit the required use and purpose. This will involve a substantial increase in useable area as well as the creation of a meeting room, expanded library, storage areas, kitchen, swimming pool and decking areas, as well as a boma style braai area. The design development and consultation stage is complete and we are looking to make the required approval submissions during the course of March 2016, to commence construction as soon as possible. Forest View, ERF 238 This exclusive sectional title residential development is set for approximately 30 units and has followed a very exciting concept design, one that we are confident will ensure that these units will be extremely sought after. The concept design development stage is complete and we hope to present to the Architectural Review Commitee during the course of March 2016. Following this, the detail design development and submission and approvals stage will commence. We are currently on track to launch the project towards the end of 2016. In the interim we have concluded extensive storm water control measures to ensure that the pristine area adjacent to the forest and trails is protected from any possible future rain damage. Brettenwood Lakes This second phase consists of a total of 52 sectional title units made up of 9 x 1 bedroom, 33 x 2 bedroom and 10 x 3 bedroom villas. Construction on the first 2 blocks (12 x 2 bed units) is almost complete and we are well into the always-challenging finishing programme, set to complete by the end of May 2016. Piling of the 3-bedroom units is complete and all foundations for units with brickwork on the ground level is well advanced. Simultaneously we have launched the bulk earthworks, platforms and 1st stage retaining walls on the uppermost 1-bedroom units with arguably the very best sea views on the estate. The Lakes Development is now in full implementation phase. It is set to be a very sought after component of Brettenwood. With a construction schedule of approximately 18 months, we look forward to completing during the 3rd quarter of 2017. Electrical Substation Approval for the Brettenwood Electrical substation is now in place and we are well into the design finalisation stage. This will close the electrical network loop allowing greater security of electricity supply into the Estate. Currently options are being considered on its final location, but it will be sited near the new Forest View project area. We hope to commence construction within the next 3 months and to be complete before the end of 2016. Second Gate House We have commenced with the detail design development and planning approvals for the Second Gate House which will be submitted to the Architectural Review process during the course of March 2016. This Gate House is to mirror the existing Main Gate House and is to be located at the existing temporary entrance near the Forest Village side of the Estate, to make provision for residents, visitors and contractors. Construction will commence once the approval process is complete. They would sit there for hours, chatting about the house being built around them – their house, and bask in the view of the ocean that they were enjoying, hoping that it would be as incredible as it was then, from every window of the soon to be complete No. 97 Kingfisher Boulevard. Upon reflection, that same spot where they sat soaking in the peace and tranquility is most likely in the scullery of their incredible home now, and just about the only space in the house that doesn’t have an exquisite unobstructed eye across the Brettenwood vista; over the forest and straight into the Indian Ocean. A 270º panoramic of beauty. Let’s put it simply. Their house is stunning. And that is all by design. Their design. Thirteen drafts of it apparently, but perfection takes time and patience and growing excitement. Today their house is a snap shot of minimalist relaxation. Contemporary, but with a New York apartment feel. Open, light… and wonderfully warm and welcoming. Although those last two probably have a lot more to do with the Dickerson’s themselves. Quinten, who is a Property Developer with a number of other stands on the Estate, was completely hands on throughout the process. On site daily, he project managed and implemented just about every feature and facet of their home, and you can tell. The attention to detail, the tailor made choices - it is a perfect ‘fit’ for the couple and their two sweet Yorkies, Lulu and Zoe. 10 | BCE MAGAZINE BCE MAGAZINE | 11 Quinten and Lauren Dickerson would bring camping chairs, pop them up on a very specific mound of dirt, pull out a beautiful picnic and then relax, enjoying sundowners together, in the gathering dark. Something a bit more tranquil and peaceful, far from crowded concrete and busy streets. They felt strongly that this place would be along the North Coast and they visited several estates and developments to test this theory. They actually only visited Brettenwood on a whim during one lazy Sunday afternoon drive, always under the illusion that it would be just a little bit too expensive. They didn’t think that they would finish the day heart set on building their Brettenwood dream home. But they say, they drove in and their first thought was “wow”, they fell in love with it pretty much at first sight, “It just felt right”. Even then, deal done, they had no immediate plans to start the construction and move in… they thought it would be at least 3 years before they would break new ground as it were, but just 6 months later, with a design in hand the excitement took over and the build began. As you walk through their home you will note, almost subconsciously that everything flows outwards, you move through the house and everywhere you turn there is this unbelievable view sucking you forward, making you feel calm. Whether lying in bed, or in the stunning bath, or sitting on the outside patio, or the kitchen, the study… anywhere really, there it is, the forest, the ocean, the tranquility. You are, “immersed in the greenery”. 12 | BCE MAGAZINE To ensure that the view remains unobstructed and in an effort to “bring the outdoors in,” glass is a predominant feature, including glass balustrades in the main bedroom so that you don’t even have to lift your head to see the sea. Every part of this home is exceptionally designed, for instance it has been built in such a way that the wind wraps around it leaving everything calm at its centre, including the rim flow pool. Wood is another exquisite feature, with softly coloured oak floors throughout and a floating spiraling wooden staircase that takes you up to the main bedroom. A glass-beaded chandelier hangs delicately in this centre atrium. An attention grabbing piece… but along with so many of the other features in the house, it comes complete with its own unforgettable backstory. This one included Quinten clutching the chandelier and shimmying out into this still empty space on a plank of wood, which his father-in-law secured by standing on the other end. This all in an effort to check they were picking the right statement piece for the area. They were! The main bedroom is a focal point. It sprawls into the giant dressing room and bathroom, adding to the free and open flow of the house. There is also a Koi pond and wooden bridge leading up to the front door. It must be noted that all water throughout the house is ‘off the grid’. There is a full water recycling system in place, built underneath the pool. Of course, they were pretty well connected in this regard; Quinten is also the co-founder of True Water, a water treatment solutions company. A perfect night in the Dickerson’s home includes listening to jazz play in the background – the entire house has surround sound, which can be controlled through an app on their phones. It’s hard to find. There is either too much of something… or there isn’t enough – that’s the story of our life really. So when you find balance, in life, work, partnerships, friendships, ideas, then you hold onto it because it will serve you well. Lou Kelly and Melinda Kleyn have just opened a stunning new boutique store in Tiffany’s Centre, Salt Rock and it’s going to become your favourite place to pick up a beautiful new item of clothing, or take a moment away from the world in an oasis of shopping calm. Why? Because it is overflowing with balance. Even their brand name has balance – a perfect combination of their own given names. Their mix of enthusiasm and experience is sure to make, in the words of Mel, “designer clothing more accessible for more people”. Look forward to original and exciting ranges of ladies designer clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories. The emphasis is on quality, but everything is priced for the market. Each item in the store is handpicked by the duo from top designers from around the country, with a very specific focus on what the North Coast consumer – what YOU - want and need. COOKING with ‘Class’ The store services a wide demographic (Mel brings in the younger ranges, while Lou focuses on the more sophisticated ones) and harnesses the power of capsule collections. One day you may walk in and find yourself staring at yoga gear, in amongst the other ranges, the next you may find maternity wear in its stead. In this way the content of the store is constantly changing/evolving and you, the shopper are constantly engaged. It is also a friendly place to spend some down time… where you can pull up a piece of couch and relax for a bit before your next round of fittings. Now that’s a balanced approach to happiness. The Mathabathe Case dealt with Section 118 of the Local Government : Municipal Systems Act No 32 of 2000 (“MSA”). In the Mathabathe Case, the court held that Municipalities are obliged to collect money that becomes payable to them for property rates and taxes and Municipal service charges. They are assisted to fulfil that obligation by being given security for repayment of the debt, in the form of a charge against the property, and, in certain circumstances, the capacity to prevent transfer of the property until debts have been paid. In terms of Section 118(1) of the MSA, the Registrar of Deeds may not register the transfer of a property without a rates certificate certifying that all amounts that became due in connection with the property for Municipal fees, service charges, property rates and other Municipal taxes, levies and duties during the two years preceding the date of the application for the rates certificate, have been fully paid. The Municipality is obliged to issue a rates certificate if all amounts due for the two year period prior to the application for the rates certificate are paid. Accordingly, there may still be an outstanding balance which remains due to the Municipality in respect of the property after the rates certificate has been issued and the transfer registered. In terms of Section 118(3) of the MSA, the amounts due to the Municipality are a charge on the property which enjoys preference over any mortgage bond registered against the property. Section 118(3) of the MSA does not state that it is in respect of amounts due by the seller but rather amounts due in connection with the property. These include utility charges incurred by an occupier of the property. In the recent unreported judgment of the Supreme Court of Appeal in the case of City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality v PJ Mitchell [2015] ZASCA 1 (29 January 2016) (the “Mitchell Case”), Mitchell’s counsel tried to distinguish the facts from those in the Mathabathe Case and submitted that, in sales in execution, the statutory hypothec created in terms of Section 118(3) of the MSA could only be enforced against the proceeds of the sale. The court in the Mitchell case held that there was no distinction from the Mathabathe Case. The conveyancers attending to the transfer of the property should inform the buyer if they become aware of any historical debt in respect of the property that will remain outstanding after transfer. However, to minimize the risk of being liable for historical debts, the buyer may wish have sight of the assessment issued by the Municipality in respect of the property, especially in sales in executions or sales by liquidators where there is a greater risk of unpaid historical debts. This may not necessarily protect the buyer entirely as the record keeping in some Municipalities is not always what it should be. There have been instances where Municipalities have discovered, after the transfer was registered, that there were amounts owing on that property in respect of utilities and services which they were not aware of when issuing the rates certificate. They have subsequently sought to claim them from the buyer. BCE MAGAZINE | 23 Tides Timetable APRIL 2016 LIABILITY OF AN OWNER for historical debts on a property In a previous article we published in 2013, we commented on the judgment of the Supreme Court of Appeal in the case of City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality v Mathabathe & Another 2013 (4) SA 319 (SCA) (the “Mathabathe Case”). The hypothec is not extinguished by the transfer of the property, regardless of whether the transfer was pursuant to a sale in execution or pursuant to some other type of transaction. A Municipality would be able to recover from a buyer the debts in respect of the property which arose prior to the buyer taking transfer of the property and which were not settled when the buyer took transfer of the property. BCE MAGAZINE | 23 “ Surfing to me is an art, it’s like painting a canvas, you can draw any line you want and express all would when you are painting. “ your feelings on a wave, as you Most of us are born with a gift, but it takes a lifetime to see it, or acknowledge its potential for greatness, by which point it’s almost too late to make it matter. There are a lucky few however that not only realize their gifts, but make them count pretty much from the day they draw their first breath. Salt Rock local, Shane Sykes, is one such guy; he’s been finding the artistry of surfing since the age of 9. There are no ‘easy’ surf spots in Salt Rock, so learning here is learning the hard way, but that fact coupled with Shane’s natural ability to craft something special carving up waves, throwing in serious airs, massive off the top turns and epic cutbacks - has made him a surfer to be feared. He gets in, makes it count and gets out – having amassed several wicked moves, while everyone else is still getting to their feet … he doesn’t need time, just a board and his own fearless nature. The end result makes him a formidable presence on the circuit. We were lucky enough to catch up with the Salt Rock surf sensation before he headed off to compete in Australia, here’s what he had to say. BCE: How long have you lived in Salt Rock? SS: For 10 years now. I have loved every second of it. BCE: When did you begin surfing? And on which beaches? SS: I began surfing at the age of 9 with my brother as we had our family beach cottage on Tiffany’s beach. Our parents never surfed so we got into it ourselves. BCE: Did you learn on your own or did someone teach you? SS: At first we tried learning on our own but after a year or so we became friends with Tammy Lee Smith (South African former Pro-Surfer on the ladies circuit) and Bongani Xulu (member of the Surfing South Africa board of directors). We started learning properly at the Secret Surf Spot ‘Backpackers’. We would go there every Friday to watch surf movies and on Sundays we’d go surf in Durban (because being a learner surfer it’s better to start in Durban). However I hardly went to Durban, I would rather just stay and surf Tiffany’s. BCE: What is your favorite thing about living in Salt Rock? SS: I love the support that everyone here gives me. There are no negative vibes from anyone, in and out of the water. Unless we are in holiday season, then there tends to be some tension (laughs). Otherwise I love everything about Salt Rock. BCE: When you are home and not competing where is your favorite surf break? SS: I love surfing as many different spots as I can. But I aways love surfing Salt Rock main beach with my friends. BCE: What do you do to keep fit for competitions? SS: I eat as healthily as possible and I train twice a week with a guy named Neil Diesel, he does a lot of body weight training and cardio stuff. I don’t touch weights or go to an indoor gym. We do everything outside right where it all started at the Secret Surf Spot. On top of that I have my surf coach Quintin Jones that gives me really good advice about everything I’m doing, right or wrong. Warrior BCE: Which international competition do you look forward to the most? SS: That would be the Ballito Pro because it’s local and all the best in the world come to our part of the world and it’s good for me to see how they prepare for such a big event. I learn a lot from that event every year even if I don’t compete. Shane Sykes Image: Greg Ewing BCE: Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time? SS: I plan to be on the World Tour / CT, which includes the top 36 surfers in the world. For the years leading up to that I will be competing as much as possible to earn enough points to get there. BCE: If you could surf the best waves in the world with 5 people, who would they be? SS: I would love to surf in the Metawai Islands in Indonesia with my best friends, as they push you to surf better… and you have the most fun BCE: What are the positive attributes that surfing can offer youngsters? SS: Everything is positive about surfing for younger kids. I would really love it if more parents wanted their children to surf. It prevents children from playing video games and getting bored. Yes, there is a bad reputation for surfers in some people’s eyes but it shouldn’t be like that. It’s a job for me now and I’m sure every kid would love to have surfing as a job. BCE: Do you have any advice for young local kids wanting to start surfing? SS: Young kids that want to start surfing should never be afraid of the ocean, that’s the first thing. But with it being an out-of-school sport, it takes up a lot of homework and learning time, so you have to be dedicated to your school work as much as you are to surfing! OUT & ABOUT What’s better than great company and good food coming together? Not much, and that’s why the Home & Country team’s first Build-a-Burger event went down so well. On a beautiful summer’s afternoon in late January, Peter Cameron and the rest of the Home & Country team hit the boma at Brettenwood’s Woodlands Community Centre, armed with burger buns and patties. Residents were invited to join them and enjoy homemade hamburgers built to their exacting expectations and individual tastes. Who said you can’t please everyone all the time. The event was a little “thank you” to the team’s ‘former’ clients, as well as an opportunity to say “hi” and see how everyone was doing, now that they are established members of the Brettenwood family. “The majority of the residents at the event were sold property by us two or three years ago and we are proud to have genuine friendships with them” says Peter Cameron. The result? A boma overflowing with full stomachs and happy chatter. In short, it was an absolute success. Meet the DICKERSONS Who are the Dickersons? The Dickersons are Quinten and Lauren Dickerson, we have been married 2 years and have two lovely little yorkies Lulu and Zoe Dickerson. We both grew up in La Lucia before starting our new adventure in the North Coast to find the lifestyle we were looking for. What do you do for a living? My main business is True Water which is focused on water treatment. We specialize in treating water from potable right through to industrial and effluent waste. I am also very heavily invested in property development, which started out with me building my own home in Brettenwood. I found a calling in developing, which has since become another passion of mine where my main focus is luxury developments in upmarket housing estates such as Brettenwood and the likes. I have currently got 5 homepackages underway in Brettenwood and have invested in this estate due to my belief that Brettenwood has something very special to offer in the upper end of the market and will grow from strength to strength, especially with the area growing with such rapid speed. Lauren is a qualified teacher who enjoys teaching all different ages groups, she also assists me with my businesses from time to time and makes sure the household runs smoothly. What do you do to have fun? We love taking our dogs Lulu and Zoe for early morning and evening walks through the Estate, spending time with friends and family and entertaining guests in our home. We also enjoy relaxing at home with a good book and looking out onto the view of Ballito or going to the beach. We like to go out for dinners and explore the restaurants of Ballito. We enjoy a good gym session together before work every (most) mornings. Why did you invest in Brettenwood? We had looked at all the estates in the area and what they offered from a lifestyle perspective. As we entered Brettenwood we instantly fell in love with this piece of paradise. The architecture, vegetation and stunning pond and ocean views made the decision to become part of the Brettenwood family very easy. When you enter Brettenwood you truly feel as though you are away from the hustle and bustle of urban life making this a truly attractive investment in our lifestyle. Safety for us was a very important factor and as we drove in the secure gates of Brettenwood one Sunday afternoon we felt the peace and tranquility and knew that this was the place we wanted to call home. The Home and Country sales staff made the whole process seamless and easy, making this by far the most enjoyable and easiest purchase to date. I have recommended Brettenwood to all my friends and family and advise if you do not get your piece in paradise now you will be sorry. What do you like the most about the North Coast? The North Coast is an up and coming area which we feel is still very undervalued. The area is developing rapidly and with the infrastructure expanding we get to enjoy seeing the area grow from strength to strength. The North Coast feels like a holiday destination all year round with its beautiful beaches, greenery and the beautiful morning sunrises. Evening sunsets over the ocean shouldn’t be missed. What amenities in the Estate gives your family the most reward? The peaceful walking paths throughout the Estate as well as the facilities like the pool, sauna and gym. What is your message for other families looking to move into a gated estate on the North Coast? You cannot appreciate the true value of this lifestyle and the peace of mind it offers until you have lived in a gated estate such as Brettenwood. Locking your doors and security gates when the sun starts to set is a very unsettling lifestyle. You shouldn’t have to live on the edge when at home. Being able to take a walk at night through the estate is a relaxing experience and it’s truly magical feeling safe doing so. What is South Africa’s best attribute? Offered at R2 990 000 Keeping BEER SIMPLE Written by Richard Chennells Microbreweries across the United States punch out so much beer that they now account for 11% of the total beer sales per year. In South Africa, the picture is a little different. Our micro-brewed beer sales currently sit at about 0.05%, but that figure is growing constantly. Why? What is this whole movement all about? Why is every Mumford and Sons fan trying to start a microbrewery? What’s with the beards and the buttoned up lumberjack shirts? Why are 50 year olds, peppered in tattoos and wearing muscle huggers suddenly trying to start beer brands? The answer is simple. It’s rewarding. There is nothing better than fussing over a beer recipe or design and then going through all the admin of brewing it. Whether in the kitchen with a home brewing kit or mixing a few tonnes of grain in a massive 50 000 litre Mash Tun, the smell of that steaming barley malt and the excitement that the whole process evokes is second to none. One mistake and you could cock up the whole batch. Then there is of course making sure you put the right amount of yeast in the fermentation vessel and double checking you have no contamination that will spoil your brew. You know that if you even see a fly umphing near the hops it could be THE END! You then go through the painstaking task of waiting, while the beer ferments. They’re the longest days of your life I tell you, but you wait patiently/impatiently until it is TIME. You invite your mates around or put that beer on tap in the pub, to share that moment of truth, and then... “AAAAAAAAAAAAAH”, down like a homesick mole it goes. The BEST bloody beer you have EVER tasted. Because YOU made it. There is nothing better! The part that comes next is the not so fun part. Bottling and kegging the beer, the marketing expenses, delivery trucks, the installation of expensive dispensing equipment at pubs, drivers who aren’t on time, breakdowns and punctures on freeways. Pubs complaining at 2am about foaming beer (because the barman is actually a moron), beer going off because the gates for the delivery vehicle were locked so the keg sat in the Durban heat for 3 hours from midday. Then of course ensuring that you’re making consistent beer, making sure it has a decent shelf life etc. That part’s no fun at all but someone’s got to do it. This is where I take my hat off to those guys that got it right and have one of their beers on a bottle store shelf near you. It’s a damn good effort. Personally for me I try and talk guys (those who ask for advice and those who don’t) out of it. Rather have a small brewery with a small pub and brew and sell onsite. Grow from there. It’s the way forward. If you want to go big from the start then rustle up some investors locally or from abroad and go for it, good luck. I have been fortunate to be part of this whole beer movement and journey over the last few years. It’s very exciting for guys making it and the folks who drink it. Bottom line is that it offers all of us more choice. The draw back of course is that because there is so much choice where does one begin? Have you looked at the beer aisle at your local TOPS recently? Have you ever been in that aisle and looked blankly at all the different labels, with names like Naked Mexican, Devils Peak, Brew Dog, Tiddley Toad, Lumberjack, Weissbier? Seriously… where do you start? What does it all mean? Cherry Beer, Orange Beer, Pumpkin Beer? For those of you feeling like a spare wheel, almost too scared to place your order when your mates are ordering a “craft” beer by name and then discussing the tasting notes at the table, don’t get too anxious. And ladies out there who are about to host a dinner party and want to put on a nice spread of different beers but don’t know where to begin, I can help. If you are just getting into it then go for a lager from a micro-brewery. It’s a subtle way to start and not too different a taste from what you are used to, i.e. ‘normal’ beers like those from Windhoek and SAB. If you want something more fruity on the tongue try a Weissbier or a Blonde beer. From there step into the Pilsner zone where you will get a slight whiff of hops. If you want to be a little daring try an IPA or a hoppy beer. There are loads of microbreweries playing around with different types of hops as well as the amount of hops they put in their beers. I personally love hoppy beers but too much hops is no good for me. Without getting too complicated just first get to understand the difference in styles and this will help you. It’s also a good idea to go and visit a few breweries to get a better understanding. Call ahead and see if they do tastings and tours and make sure you have a designated driver who won’t be drinking. Owned by: Catherine de Lange The big idea: Esque (derived from the word picturesque) is a stylish furniture and decor store that lives online. Established in 2013, its pages are filled with stylish designer orientated products, inspired from trends from around the world. The duo’s vision was straightforward, to offer simple, beautiful, design orientated fare. The big idea: Working in the marketing world, Catherine noticed a disconnect between clients, their brands and the outsourced marketing process. She founded BrandBird Marketing Solutions in 2013 to address this problem. BrandBird offers a personal, streamlined and efficient system that offers all marketing solutions necessary for a successful brand venture. BrandBird is essentially an extension of a clients business, an outsourced marketing department, specialising in brand launches, brand revamps and brand management. This boutique agency provides personalised & strategic marketing solutions and prides itself in offering prompt responses between client briefing and successful implementation of the strategy. This allows us to live and work from anywhere in the world - so why not Salt Rock? 52 | BCE MAGAZINE I believe there is an expanding entrepreneurial culture in our generation and in specifically the area we are in; I don’t think it is a coincidence that there are a number of old girls who are entrepreneurs in this area it is a gold mine of opportunity at the moment. Risk vs. reward? My business partner, Kylie Harborth and I both trust in our faith and guidance from God. He gave us the confidence to go ahead and start this up. We both had other work on the go when we started Esque. So a big obstacle at the time was juggling our focus and giving Esque what it needed to launch. We also had to teach ourselves about website coding. What about St Anne’s? My dad always said that the networks and friendships we make at school will come in handy later on and will be lifelong relationships. I never really knew what he meant until we left school. We all have such a sisterhood bond from all living together for 5 years at boarding school and I think it’s something we will always have right up to when we are old. It’s a lovely connection and I think at some point all ‘old girls’ tap into that connection and have found it to be beneficial. Contact: email: cath@brandbird.co.za | website: www.brandbird.co.za | call: 082 866 4523 Salt Rock has been my home for the past 24 years. I have seen this little town grow year by year and I am excited by the growth. Great things are destined for this coastal town. Risk vs. reward? As any person starting a new business would know, it takes determination, grit and a huge amount of perseverance. The marketing world is flooded, so for me, it was about building relationships with my clients and forming a trust with them, that they know, no matter what, I will always come through with a well thought out marketing strategy. Advice for women? When things get tough, keep going. Always give 110%, build lasting client relationships, always over deliver, set short and long term goals, have brand mentors, expand your knowledge by reading and sponging off leaders in your industry. . The worst thing that you can do on the way home, after a busy day, is to stop at a store, restaurant or take-away and buy a convenience meal – no matter how healthy or ‘fat free’ the label tells you it is. A common misconception is that cooking a healthy meal takes time as well as fancy ingredients. The truth however is that a super healthy, simple, functional meal can also be super easy to make. The trick is to keep a few specific items on your grocery list and in your kitchen as staples. These are foods that have a relatively long shelf life and can be put together in various combinations to make up a nutritious meal. The first thing to consider is protein. Items like eggs, tinned fish, smoked chicken, cottage cheese, lean biltong, tofu, smoked or pickled fish are all excellent sources of protein. These are all versatile ingredients that will keep without having to be frozen. There should always be fresh vegetables and salad ingredients in your fridge. A good selection that keep well and last, provided they are refrigerated include: carrots, tomatoes, onions, baby spinach, broccoli, peppers, cabbage, cauliflower, butternut, gemsquash, beetroot and corn (on the cob or mini) – to name a few. A good tip is to keep your salad leaves and other “soft” salad ingredients in a sealed plastic container in the fridge to maximise shelf life. Some frozen vegetables stashed in the freezer can also be a good last resort as they cook in minutes. Then starches. Why is everybody still so afraid of carbohydrates? They provide a valuable source of fuel for muscles and the brain as well as essential vitamins. Carbohydrates are particularly important for growing children and for those who are exercising. Good options that cook easily include sweet potato, tinned lentils, tinned beans, tinned chickpeas, wholewheat couscous and wholewheat pasta. THE AFRICAN SUN VS. YOUR SKIN Other store cupboard staples should include flavourings, like garlic, ginger, dried herbs, dried spices, lemon juice, oils and vinegars. Considering that a meal should contain all of the above elements, you can now let your creative juices get to work and put together delicious combinations for supper time. A few examples could include; • A frittata (aka omelette) with eggs, tomatoes, onions, peppers and sweet potato. • A salad with smoked fish, baby spinach, carrots, cabbage and cannellini beans. • Couscous with smoked chicken, roasted butternut, peppers and roasted red onion. • A salad with biltong, chickpeas, steamed broccoli, beetroot and a cottage cheese dressing. • Pasta with roasted baby tomatoes, onion, corn and tinned fish. • Baked sweet potato with cottage cheese and a fresh salad with spinach, tomatoes, red onions and baby corn. Sounds good enough to eat, and it is. Written by Laura Channing I am UK born which means that the South African sun has taken a bit of getting used to, but I have noticed that it takes some getting used to for people born here too. It’s just that strong, that powerful, and its effect on our skin is noticeable. Advice More and more people are now becoming aware of how the sun can age your skin and affect it negatively, however there are still a large contingent that remain ‘sun worshippers’. People come to Laura Channing Spa & Skin concerned about ageing. They want advice on how to prevent the effects of ageing and on how to get younger looking, firmer skin. What people have to understand is that we can help improve your skin, but only if you commit to regular facials followed by a good skincare routine. You also have to commit to staying out of the way of those harmful African rays that we all love so much. Love hurts basically. The older generation can slow down that ageing process by protecting their skin with an SPF. They should also have a facial once a month to help lift and firm the skin. The younger generation needs to make a conscious effort from a young age to protect their face using a SPF 30 everyday. While on the beach / in direct sunlight they should be using SPF 50. Favourite Sun Care Product Natural Lab SPF 30 for the face R180 Sunscreen does more than protect you from cancer and sunburn, it also protects you against photoaging. What is Photoaging? Photoaging is frequent and repeated sun exposure and sunburns, which accelerate aging of the skin, making you look older than you are. Effects of Sun Exposure 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Freckles, pigmentation, large brown spots Dry and rough textured skin Thinning of the skin, loss of skin tone which causes sagging Deep wrinkling, crows feet around the eye area Fine red blood vessels appearing on the cheeks, nose and ears Facts About UV Rays • You can’t feel UV damaging your skin. It’s happening even when the sun doesn’t feel hot and when it’s cloudy. • UV Rays penetrate through glass. i.e. They even get you while you’re driving. 62 | BCE MAGAZINE Laura Channing Spa & Skin is a beautiful boutique spa, offering an upmarket experience to locals and holidaymakers. Such a person takes pleasure in pushing pause on a world that careers around too fast, escaping the ‘time is money’ rat-race, if only for a few brief hours, to acknowledge the beauty in quietness and camouflage. They know that it is a rare and beautiful gift to hear the call of the crane, the warble of a rainbird before a thunderstorm or to spot the splash of bright red colour of a Red Bishop perched on a piece of dry grass. The good news is that Brettenwood Coastal Estate is a bird lover and watchers paradise. If the female Pied Kingfisher in the Brettenwood logo didn’t give it away… you won’t have to travel far through the gates of the estate to discover its deep appreciation for birds in every road you turn down. Literally. There is Kingfisher Boulevard, Plover Crescent, Dabchick Dam, Weavers Nest, Wagtail Rest, the list goes on. Since the estate was established in 2007 more than 234 different bird species have been spotted and documented. In short, the bird watching opportunities at Brettenwood are magnificent with a number of different habitats attracting diverse species. This gives the bird enthusiasts amongst us, whether learned or beginners, the opportunity to observe an incredible variety of birds. Southern Red Bishop For forest birds there is the Coastal Forest above the Golovan track and the Golovan track itself. Walking in this area is accompanied by a symphony of calls from tinkerbirds, wood doves, barbets, sunbirds and apalises, all tempered with the calls of the Spectacled Weaver and Brown-Hooded Kingfisher. There is even the chance to see a raptor or two with Black Sparrowhawk regularly spotted all year round and the Common Buzzard and Yellow-Billed Kite present in summer. Other raptors spotted now and again are the African Crowned Eagle, Black-Chested Snake Eagle, European Honey Buzzard and recently the Palmnut Vulture. Dams on the Estate are excellent for ducks and geese with the highlight being the occasional visits from White-backed Ducks and African PygmyGeese. Waders like the Three-Banded Plover and Wood Sandpiper are also observed. The reedy edges are a goldmine of birds like the Common Moorhen, Black Crake and African Jacana. The rare Lesser Moorhen has been recorded twice recently. The other occupants of the reedy edges are the weavers, bishops and queleas. Raptors seen around the dams include the African Fish-Eagle and Western Osprey. Grassland and scrub birds are also sighted. Notable amongst these, the Rattling Cisticola, Fantailed Widowbird, Croaking Cisticola and Zitting Cisticola. The White-Browed Scrub-Robin is more often than not heard on the ridges of Plover Crescent and Red Bishop Close and one pair raised a family of three youngsters in the brush at Woodlands Residents Centre circle. Possibly the most celebrated bird within Brettenwood Coastal Estate is the Spotted Eagle-Owl. A number of these after-dark raptors are at home in the trees around Ibis Crescent and one often finds residents taking visitors to look for “the owls”. African Jacana However the most satisfying bird observations are those made in one’s own garden. The brilliant colours of weavers, bishops and queleas as they pop in for a feed from the birdfeeder or a dip in the birdbath to cool off are heaven sent. The privilege of having a Guineafowl family visit in one’s garden and being able to watch the chicks grow into adults is another special Brettenwood pleasure. Recent rare birds seen on the estate include Narina Trogon, Green Malkoha, Little Bittern, Lesser Moorhen, Grey Crowned Crane, African Crowned Eagle, Great White Pelican, Blue-Mantled Crested Flycatcher and European Honey Buzzard. Then, between 1943 and 1951, Durban experienced a further 21 attacks, seven of which were fatal. Every morning, these men risk life and limb to tackle our oceans and perform what some might call “the bravest act in town” - protecting our shores and sun-tanning hot spots from the unlikely event of a shark attack. Desperate for a solution, the city authorities adopted a system that had been successfully used in Australia previously. In 1952, seven Gill Nets, each 130 m long, were laid along Durban’s beachfront. In the first year of operation alone, 552 sharks were caught. It’s worth noting that no serious shark-inflicted injuries have occurred at Durban’s beaches since their inception. First a little bit of geography to set the scene. Our warm Indian Ocean covers approximately one-fifth of the total ocean area of the world. It is the smallest, youngest, and physically most complex of the world’s three major oceans. It stretches for more than 10,000 km between the southern tips of Africa and Australia and has an area of about 73,440,000 square km. Simply put, our waters are vast, wild and unpredictable and they play host to some of the most beautiful, yet fearsome predators on the planet. It stands to reason then that protection is required. The Gill Net became the trusted solution for bather protection and the Natal Provincial Administration created a statutory body, known as the Natal Anti-Shark Measures Board, now called the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB), which was “charged with the duty of approving, controlling and initiating measures for safeguarding bathers against shark attacks”. The first shark protection systems date back as far as 1907 when the Durban City Council decided to erect a large and rather crude semi-circular -steel enclosure of approximately 180 m in diameter in order to protect swimmers from the surf, strong currents and the possibility of a shark attack. Today, specialists from the KZN Sharks Board continue to research and develop new technologies in order to uphold its critical standards and perfect the balance between the prevention of shark attacks and by-catch management. The enclosure was removed in 1928 and for the next 11 years there was little evidence to suggest that shark attacks were a problem, however this all changed in 1940, when five attacks took place along an 8 km stretch of The introduction of drumlines in 2007 brought about a 47.5% reduction in the annual by-catch of non-threat species, such as dolphins, turtles, birds, whales, fish and rays. This was good news for them, but what about us? Fortunately, scientific research has shown that there has been no significant difference in the Catch-Per-Unit-Effort for White, Tiger or Zambezi Sharks (historically the shark species responsible for attacks in KZN) caught in the nets between pre and post - 2007 periods. So theoretically at least, the threat level remains low. Our beaches are a significant draw card for international and local tourists, who bring with them all sorts of boosts for our local economy. This means that an additional positive by-product of the KZN Sharks Board doing what they do best is that we all continue to thrive while doing what we do best too. The KZN Sharks Board, with over 50 years’ experience, is the only organization in South Africa dedicated to providing bather protection against sharks. As such, it is a specialist in its field and has become a Center of Excellence and an Institute we South Africans can all be proud of! I look forward to the next 50 years and the further development of environmentally sensitive practices to protect and care for our beautiful oceans. That’s what lives at the heart of every development, every project, every choice, every idea. It is the difference between building a house and building excellence. While other developers may build on a site and force fit design into the space thereafter, Union3 approach things more holistically. They lock the functionality, practicality and unique-ness in place from a design perspective first and then build around that. This makes the whole process more rewarding and the end result more exceptional. Form follows function, beautifully. Their team is able to invest in an idea and take it all the way through from concept to the finished product. Including architecture, build, execution and interior design. You just have to look at their impressive portfolio of finished projects inside Brettenwood Coastal Estate and beyond, to see the inherent value in doing what they do, how they do it. Their skill set and outlook together with the team’s deep love for the North Coast makes each project a passion project. On Brettenwood Coastal Estate, Union3 are proud to currently be developing Hornbill Hollow, an exciting new luxury freehold opportunity. According to company director Clifton Smithers, “design is going to play a bigger and bigger role in North Coast Developments, as a new wave of design orientated projects and properties take shape.” Union3 will no doubt be right there, doing what they do best - designing and creating from the inside out.
