Section 1: Introduction
This document outlines the policy and procedures for the identification and provisions of
Additional Learning Support (ALS) for all Access to Music (ATM) learners and
apprentices. This policy is aligned with the Equality and Diversity Policy, Safeguarding
Policy and Disability Statement.
Section 2: Policy Statement
It is the policy of Access to Music to provide appropriate additional support for all
learners with an identified need, to ensure they receive an equal opportunity to achieve
their qualification aim.
Section 3: Procedures
1. Types of support
Access to Music is able to provide support in the following areas;
•
Learning difficulties
•
Emotional and behavioural difficulties
•
Physical and medical problems
•
Mental health problems
2. Identification of Need
Every phase of a learner’s journey with ATM contains processes for identification of an
additional learning support need.
•
All learners are offered the opportunity to disclose any learning need known to
them prior to joining ATM through the application and interview processes.
•
Learners may self refer after joining ATM at any point during their course, and staff
make every effort to ensure that learners do so.
•
Referral to learning support may take place through tutors, assessors or through
the individual tutorial and review process.
3. Screening and Diagnostic Assessment
•
At interview all learners will undertake initial assessments in literacy and numeracy.
These are designed by BKSB and accessible online. The results are available to
tutors and assessors immediately.
•
All learners referred for additional learning support will be assessed to diagnose
their need and establish an appropriate support plan.
•
Varied levels of diagnostic assessment tests are available for analytical appraisal
of referred learners.
•
ATM may employ the services of a range of external agencies for further diagnostic
testing and provision of specialist support.
4. Delivery of ALS
Additional Learning Support is provided as 1:1 discrete sessions or in-class support
according to the needs of the individual.
5. Staffing
All Additional Learning Support Tutors receive national training from ATM. A Head of
Additional Learning Support is appointed to manage the learning support team.
6. Resources
•
All ATM centres are sensitive towards creating an environment that is accessible
and supportive to all individuals.
•
The accommodation strategy addresses access and provision for those with
special requirements.
•
A centralised source of ALS resources are maintained and developed through the
Head of ALS.
•

7. Planning and Record Keeping
A copy of all additional learning support documentation is available on the ATM Google
Drive.
•
All additional learning support is reviewed on a termly basis.
•
An initial profile is completed on each learner receiving additional learning support
to provide a summary of the specific need.
•
A weekly individual session planner is maintained outlining what is covered each
session.
•
Tutors conduct a termly review with each learner.
•
All Course Managers and Lead Assessors have access to initial assessment
results and ALS tutors advise them of all learners in receipt of Additional Learning
Support.
