My mother turned 82; it was a Monday. As a family, we had already celebrated several spring birthdays. But as each special day arrives, we also enjoy personal festivities. I usually work from home on Mondays to take care of grandchildren, but that day I needed to be in the office. Thankfully, one of my other daughters was able to care for the kids at my house in my absence. The invitation went out to my mother to come by that afternoon and I would make her favorite pie for her birthday. Now, this is no ordinary pie! It is a “Heavenly Pie!” The recipe has been handed down through our known family history and has become a multi-generational tradition. As a little girl I can remember my mother and her sister “fighting” over who would get the biggest piece. It tasted like love. As I was putting the meringue crust in the oven to bake, I asked my mother if she knew just whose recipe this was originally. She replied that it was from Aunt Marg on her dad’s side of the family. They were from Germany, so the pie’s origins may be there. My mother then began to talk about something she had recently learned about dishes that had also been passed down through the family. Thinking that we might have hidden treasure, our detective work immediately began in my china cabinet. With my grandkids playing in the next room, we became consumed with solving this mystery. “What does the stamp on the bottom of each dish say?” “How many pieces do we have?” “These are from France, not England or New York.” “Are we sitting on a fortune?” Excitement started to get the best of us. We began to dig deep. Me on my smart phone for the history and potential worth, and Mother deep into her memories. The real next step to determine worth was to attribute a date to the potentially valuable china. We now knew where the dishes were made, but when and how did they become part of our family? The only piece of information we had about my mother’s mother (my grandmother Helen), was that her mother died in childbirth and that as a newborn, my grandmother had been adopted. Other than that, her birth father had bright red hair and a bushy red beard, and there were two other daughters. Otherwise, the history was lost. Mother remembered her mother’s adopted father. Grandpa Minchinton served in the royal English court at Buckingham Palace as a guard. She recalled that he was tall and slender, and had perfect posture. My husband, Bill, was now part of the smartphone search as he pulled up English monarchy. It turns out that “Grandpa” probably served under Queen Victoria or King Edward VII, although he only talked about the king. Then Mother said, “If only we had his bible. I am sure there would be some dates.” That’s where our treasure hunt took a sizable turn. I am the keeper of the family bibles! So upstairs I tore, surfacing moments later with 3 large Tupperware containers that housed these family heirlooms. We went through each container carefully, barely touching the old leather bindings and thin gold-leafed pages. We sneezed at the dust. The first two did, in fact, contain bibles and sacred books. The third container only seemed to have a few letters and early 1900s memorabilia. Nothing there seemed special. We combed through the bibles, unable to find the dates we believed would unlock the mystery. The beep-beep from the oven’s timer momentarily interrupted our concentration. It was time to take the crust out of the oven, so an hour had passed. I had just begun to read the first hand written letter from the third container dating back to February 1912. It began, say you saw it in “Christian Community News” Magazine Continued on Next Page | Page 7 May/June 2016 Continued from Previous Page “Dear Aunt Nell.” There was something about getting out of the hospital after an accident and injury, and crutches. It went on to read, “… if you still want the baby, you can have her.” What… What did we have? Cut to the chase… we had to look… it was signed by Roland, my babygrandmother’s apparent birth father. Pie crust now out of the oven, my mother and I literally put our heads together to read each word slowly, articulately, not wanting to miss any name or piece of lost history. There were details of which night train a woman friend could travel to bring the baby. We sat together, looking at these aged yellowed pages, stunned, taking in the emotion of deep loss. These were the heartbreaking words of my blood great grandfather who had just lost his wife at Christmastime, was injured, and having two other daughters to take care of by himself, had to come to terms with the fact that he was not able to take on the care of his newly born daughter. Mother began to read the next letter out loud as I began to babysit the next part of the pie at the stove. This letter too, began, “Dear Aunt Nell.” It seemed confus- May/June 2016 | Page 8 ing in the beginning because we had expected it to be a follow up letter from Roland to his aunt, perhaps inquiring about how baby Helen was doing. Then came the heart stopper… the letter was not from Roland, but from a young woman, soon to be 21, who was writing her Aunt Nell announcing the upcoming wedding to Roland in just five weeks. This was from my grandmother’s birth mother before she was even married! It was written in June of 1902. I turned off the stove. I wanted to cry. I knew the end of their story. Lillie was her name. And they were in love. She described in detail two outfits she might possibly wear on her wedding day. One was a new gray suit. The other was a light yellow dress with petite flowers. It would be on a Tuesday. Roland’s father was a minister who was going to marry them. Emotion filled our hearts. They were so happy. She sounded so full of excitement for their future together. Then came the third set of hand-written pages with the complete chronology of Roland and Lillie’s marriage, the birth of their children, the death of one of them, and the death of Lillie almost one month after baby Helen’s birth. say you saw it in “Christian Community News” Magazine Part of the sadness of the original story of her mother dying in childbirth briefly diminished. Lillie had nearly one month with her new, tiny little baby. One can assume that she probably never did regain full strength and died of complications due to the childbirth. However, together, she and Roland must have talked about the “what if.” Roland, in his deep despair probably had Lillie’s blessing to give her favorite Aunt Nell her final gift… a child that Aunt Nell was never able to have on her own. My grandmother, Helen, was born in November of 1911. Lillie died December 1911. February 1912 Roland offered Helen to Aunt Nell and her husband, E.J. Minchinton. The adoption was final in May 1912. (By the way, the Titanic sunk in April of 1912.) About the time I was topping off the pie with freshly whipped cream, I asked my mother what Helen said about her adopted mother. “Not much,” she replied. “Only that she was sick and in bed most of the time.” Aunt Nell died when Helen was only 16. I watched my mother as she, for the first time, began processing names and stories. Her mother obviously knew much more than anyone guessed, but never spoke of those times. We concluded that the memories must have been very painful, and were better to remain tucked away during her lifetime. Emotionally spent, I began to wrap the Heavenly Pie for Mother to take home. When 6-year-old granddaughter Ansley realized that we were not going to eat the pie right away, she begged for a slice. P-L-E-E-E-A-S-E! With a warm heart and a soft smile, I said, “Of course.” Who could deny this little one (in our family’s next generation) the enjoyment of something so special. I envision her as the keeper of the secret pie recipe and family bibles one day. She gobbled it up as fast as she could, delighting in each sweet mouthful. Now, as far as the china is concerned, it cannot measure to the treasure we found in family that day. My mother and I continue to ponder the past. Most every conversation brings up a newly thought of connection. Certainly the next step is to venture more into an ancestry site, but for now, the gift we both received on my mother’s birthday was that of a new memory of shared discovery about a family in which we both deeply love. <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< Exp 07/05/16 say you saw it in “Christian Community News” Magazine | Page 9 Exp 7/05/16 May/June 2016 Perfect Mom By Denise Roberts I f I could raise my children all over again I’d … have a list a mile long in a heartbeat of time. Motherhood is fraught with questions, regrets, failures, joys, successes and one of the questions we will plague ourselves with forever is “Am I – or Was I a good mom?” I am a mother of two young men now – ages 23 and 26. I recently asked them to send me their reflections of me as a mom. This can be a little nerve wracking so I don’t necessarily recommend it but the responses I got were very interesting. They did not say anything about great vacations or the fact that they were the last one to get their cell phones. They didn’t mention the time I made a 10 p.m. run to Krispy Kreme for donuts for class treats or the time I forgot about open house and came skidding in to say hello with 10 minutes left to spare. They did not praise me for great May/June 2016 | Page 10 say you saw it in “Christian Community News” Magazine birthday parties or fault me for missing things because I worked full time. Everything they mentioned had to do with the influence I poured into them that made them who they are today. This brings joy and sadness all at the same time. Joy because for the most part I really like who my sons are. So I must have done some things really right. Sadness because I see gaps in their character that I wish I could go back and pour my influence into. Gaps I believe exist because I was often distracted and fractured in my understanding of who I needed to be for my children. Guilt weighed heavy when work interfered with being at everything every time. I measured my success against other moms who seemed to do it better. I looked around for affirmation and found competition – if only in my own mind and heart. In my insecurities, I abdicated the influence I was intended to have to others. I share with younger moms today these three key values that will shape your parenting and shore up your confidence on the difficult days. Things I wish I had known. We are not raising children. We are raising future husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers. We are raising the future generation of decision makers. Our children will remember those things that shape them as adults. It’s easy to lose sight of this in the middle of a toddler tantrum or teenage eyeroll argument but this simple shift in perspective is incredibly confidence building. You are the perfect mom for your children. Your children are a gift from God – whether they have been born naturally or are adopted. God chose you to be their mom. Because God chose you, He has already deemed the imperfect you perfect for the job. We can trust God’s choosing. He has been in the business of hand-picking imperfect people to be the perfect choice for specific tasks for thousands of years. He chose old people, liars, schemers, the broken, the crazy, the insecure, the overlooked, and the uninvited to be founders, leaders, kings, mothers, and deliverers. This is especially important on those days when our failures dwarf our successes; when you feel mean and ugly and ready to pick a fight with anyone, especially your kids, and you feel like anything but perfect. If God can hand-pick the likes of Moses, David, Leah, Jacob, and Mary Magdalene, with all of their faults, insecurities, issues, and failures and still deem them perfect for their given task, then we can fully trust, even if we don’t understand that God has deemed us to be the perfect mom for our children even with all of our faults. You are doing a good work, don’t come down. As moms we will face all kinds of opportunities to compromise. Some are definitely warranted – I’m all for the “pick your battles” philosophy. But compromise in the wrong things and we lose our influence in our children’s lives. In the Old Testament there was a man named Nehemiah who was hand-picked by God to lead the Israelites in rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem. Nehemiah encountered much opposition. Some was obvious, outright and direct. Some was more subtle and subversive. The last attempt to stop the work came in the form of compromise – asking Nehemiah to come meet with those who were opposing him – to find some kind of middle ground – Let’s work together on this. Four times the enemy sent Nehemiah a message asking him to come and meet with them and four times Nehemiah responded with “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down.” (Neh 6:3a) Any compromise on Nehemiah’s part would have undermined his influence as a leader and halted the wall building work. He knew this was a battle worth fighting. The battles worth fighting are individual for your family. For my husband and me, travel ball was one of those battles. We had to evaluate what we were already doing (both us and our children) and decide what was important to say you saw it in “Christian Community News” Magazine Continued on Next Page | Page 11 May/June 2016 Continued from Previous Page us. We determined that family dinners and fully engaging in Boy Scouts were a good work and recognized that travel ball would cause us to come down. This was unpopular with our kids as well as their would-be coaches. But we stayed our ground. Both of our boys earned their Eagle Scout ranks and have realized tremendous benefits from their years in scouting that they would not have otherwise. Remember that I asked my boys for their reflections on me as a mom? going to remember every epic fail. They aren’t going to remember every epic success. The things that you think – wow this is really great – they’ll be like – Really? We went the Grand Canyon? What they are going to remember is what molded them into the adults they become. Mom, you have been hand-picked by God to be the one who has the most influence in their lives. You are doing a great work; do not come down. Unbeknownst to the other, they both responded with this most interesting thank you: Thank you for making me eat whatever was served for dinner, for not letting me be picky – no exceptions. By far the best thing you did for me Our kids are going to remember and appreciate the oddest things and this is encouraging. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful I know that full and well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.” – Psalm 139:13-15 (NIV) saw. I was so upset that if I’d been a bee in a disturbed beehive I would’ve stung the first person that crossed my path. Fortunately, for everybody that day, I went straight home. T ears rolled down my cheeks as I called my mother. I was distraught because I couldn’t find a modest, formal gown in a size I was willing to purchase. I’d scoured every Atlanta-area mall and numerous formal and resale shops for weeks seeking the perfect dress. My mother listened to me as I cried and tore myself apart. I told her I was fat, ugly and hated the way I looked in all of the dresses that even remotely caught my attention. My self-esteem grew smaller and smaller after every store I walked out of, until it was non-existent. After I finished venting about my appearance, my mother responded with great sadness in her voice, “I can’t believe I created something that dislikes herself so much.” My response to her was, “I have to go now,” and I ended the call. Throughout my 30-minute drive home, I stewed over her comment. My feelings were hurt. She didn’t know what I was experiencing. She wasn’t standing in front of the mirror in the bazillion stores I’d previously visited. She didn’t see what I May/June 2016 | Page 14 Once I was home, I calmed myself down and began honestly reflecting on the words of truth my mother had spoken to me. My heart was broken that I’d hurt and disappointed her in such a way. While I was in the midst of my contemplation, I heard a whisper say, “If your mother feels this way, how much more do you think your ranting hurts me, after all I am your true creator.” I wept uncontrollably. My poor self image and the negative thoughts and comments I’d been making about myself tore at the heart of my creator and the one I love the most, God. By ripping myself apart I was negating the work God has done in His creation of me. My words were piercing God at the core of His heart. Oh what a life-changing moment that was for me. The words still resonate in the depths of my soul. It has given me an entirely different perspective on how I see myself now and that is a beautiful woman of God and His perfect masterpiece. Psalm 139 says that God created our inner most being. He knit us together in our mother’s wombs. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. God has say you saw it in “Christian Community News” Magazine custom designed us to be the size and shape we are. He has given us our skills and gifts, and perhaps the challenges we may encounter along the way. He wasn’t haphazard about our creation. When we don’t see ourselves as God’s beautiful and wonderful creations, we are basically saying that His work was not good enough and God had no idea what He was doing when he made us. Since we are all created in God’s image, when we rant about our appearance we are in essence telling God we don’t like His appearance either. A sobering thought. How can I love somebody with all my heart, yet not believe He is beautiful? After finally jumping off my emotional dress rollercoaster that day, I found the perfect gown at the store where I’d originally looked. They had just received a new shipment of dresses; so not only was it the perfect dress, I was the first person to purchase it from that store. And not to be conceited, but I was breathtaking the evening of the gala. It was a true Cinderella moment! I’m thankful for my mother’s boldness. Even though her words were painful at the time, God used her in a powerful and profound way to change my perception of myself and help me see my true beauty through His eyes and not my own. Since that day I pray the following prayer, I hope you will join me: My beautiful Lord, King, and Heavenly Father, thank you for teaching me this lesson. Continue to work in me so that I see myself through your eyes, and not the eyes of comparison or the world. Thank you for miraculously and wonderfully knitting me just the way you saw fit so that I can do your Kingdom work. Open the door for me to share this truth with anybody that suffers from low selfesteem. Let all women in this world see that they are beautifully created by you and in your image. So you get a second new phone and you load the same operating system as before to the new phone. Guess what? Surprise, it fries that phone too! Whoa, didn’t see that coming! So you have to shell out big bucks for a third new phone, and you go ahead and load that very same operating system on that phone too. Can you believe it, it bricked that phone too!! By now you have reached a carefully considered conclusion- you have had the incredibly bad luck of getting THREE defective phones!!! Okay, right about now you may be wondering where the stuff is about the relationship part in the title that got your attention enough to read this far. Well, you’ve already read it. In the parable above, the operating system is a person’s thought patterns and worldview, and the phones are new relationships. The problem is not with the phone; it’s with the operating system, and until the operating system is addressed, the same breakdown issue will occur every time, no matter what kind of shiny new phone it is loaded onto. You may know someone who moves from one significant other to another and another, as each romance comes to a similar, painful conclusion. And it’s the same story every time. “They did… he said… she wouldn’t…” but very seldom does the story go, “I didn’t do… my part of our trouble was…” What is obvious to onlookers and friends is the relationships are not the problem. The person’s “operating system” is the matter that needs to be addressed before any new relationship will have a chance to grow and thrive into something wonderful. Computer software consistently needs to be scanned for infections and malware to keep from inflicting damage. Because computers have no pride or hard hearts, they can be easily examined. But with us human types, not so much. It’s easier to shame and blame someone or something else than to become humble and submit to a “soul searching” with a counselor or trusted friend. That’s what it takes to uncover and remove the bitterness, resentment, or automatic negative thoughts (ANTs) that have become ingrained in our thinking patterns, or whatever it is that’s wreaking havoc on our relationships. Yeah, it’s scary (and hard) to open up to a heart and mind examination, but not as scary as a life filled with scars and sorrow. No one ever enters a relationship wanting it to fail. So, if it’s you, do what you can do. Work on you. If it’s a dear friend, have the guts to come alongside in caring confrontation to encourage them to get help. They may reject you. That’s okay, it’s always right to do the right thing. That may be the greatest gift you ever give to your friend. As a matter of fact, I am writing this article the day before my wedding! Amidst all the craziness that goes with planning the ceremony, no matter how small and intimate you are planning it to be, this article got lost in the mix. Why am I telling you about my upcoming nuptials? Because it is relevant to the topic at hand…. celebrating the important moments in life. Let me explain. My husband and I are Ghanaians (from Ghana). According to our customary traditions, we are already husband and wife. We were married the day my husband’s family went to see my family and performed the customary marriage rites. That was done in Ghana. My husband and I live in Georgia. Are you confused? Don’t be, it’s really quite simple. Ghanaians have their own marriage rites that are performed in recognition of a man and a woman coming together to form a union, and those rites/ceremonies do not require the presence of both parties. So neither my husband nor I were in attendance at our own wedding! Because we did not join in the celebrations that took place in our honor back in Ghana, it has been a little difficult for me to fully see myself as a wife. That brings me to the point: this is why we are having a wedding tomorrow - to celebrate us as a couple. It will be a celebration for friends and family to partake in, and witness, our pledges to each other. It feels like that very essential element of May/June 2016 | Page 18 celebration is what has been holding me back from seeing myself the way everyone else sees me. Which brings me to the next point.. Why it is essential to celebrate mothers and fathers on their special day each year… to let them know how much we value and appreciate them. Yes, you may have told your mother every day of the year how much you love and appreciate her. But Mother’s Day affords us all the chance to do something special for the women who birthed and nurtured us; whether it is to remember them because they are no longer with us, or to celebrate their continued influence in our lives. The same goes for Father’s Day, and all of life’s other special celebrations. Picking a day to exchange vows or to celebrate mom and dad, or a birthday is not pointless as many tend to argue. It is necessary for those involved to feel loved, valued, celebrated, and recognized. Nicole Twum-Baah moved to Georgia in 2013 after living in the Washington D.C. for over 7 yrs. She is an avid reader and adventurer who loves to dilly-dally with nature. She recently became a mother and, as a result, acquired some sort of new wisdom about life, as well as an affinity for cooking and baking. She shares some of these experiences in her writings for CCN. Nicole is also a freelance editor and owner of The Brielle Agency. She lives in Kennesaw with her husband and daughter. say you saw it in “Christian Community News” Magazine W e get people from lots of different backgrounds in our classes in The Master’s Training Center. In fact, I can’t think of a single industry that hasn’t been represented. We haven’t had an astronaut, but we have had someone from NASA! I’d like to share Daniel’s story. He is a pastor, a family man and a father of four. Suddenly, his job as a director in a Christian ministry was gone. He was confused, humbled, and embarrassed. Mostly, he was scared. How was he going to take care of his family? He reached out to the leadership at his church, First Baptist of Woodstock, who directed him to the Employment Workshops at The Master’s Training Center. The following week, Daniel was in class, learning how to sharpen his skills for today’s job search. Once he was in the classes, he was then offered the food assistance program through Papa’s Pantry. He didn’t take us up on the offer, concerned that he would be taking food from someone else who may need it more. When the three-part workshop was over, Daniel and I continued to work together. Ongoing coaching is always available to our students until they no longer need it. At our first one-on-one meeting, I could sense that his financial burden was heavy. I talked to him again about food assistance and the “partnership program.” During the time he was active in his job search, we could assist him and his family with weekly groceries until they were back on their feet. That would help to relieve some of that financial pressure. Daniel sunk down in his chair, bowing his head very low and fixed his eyes on the floor. I knew this was new territory for Daniel and that accepting “help” was going to be difficult for him. Daniel paused thoughtfully for a about 30 seconds (a dreadfully long time) and said, still staring at the floor, “You see, this is very hard for me. It’s not pride, just very humbling.” Daniel is a godly man with wonderful traditional 770-591-9588 From the Desk of Faith Moody Director MTC values that guide his need and desire to provide for his family. So with deep respect and understanding, I bowed my head alongside Daniel only saying, “Daniel, this is what we do and people just like you are why we do it.” “I have six mouths to feed!” he said. Very gratefully and ever so humbly, Daniel accepted the “help.” Now that the pressure of feeding the family was taken care of, he was able to concentrate on the job at hand… to get a job! Hopefully, in ministry again so he could share the gospel of Christ and minister to others. He ambitiously applied at a well-known international ministry. He was excited to have been invited to an interview. Then there was another, and another. Each time, meeting with higher ranking executive leaders. It was narrowed down from 100 to two. And yes, he was offered the job! However, after that whole process, God did not give him peace about accepting the position. In faith, he declined the offer. Most people thought he had made a huge mistake. Almost immediately, his phone rang. The call was from a large church in Ohio. They needed an Executive Pastor and invited him up for a visit. Today, Daniel and his family are in the process of relocating… you guessed it, to Ohio! “Praise the Lord!” Daniel said. This is more than he could have ever imagined. He is so grateful the guidance he received from Papa’s Pantry and The Master’s Training Center. <>< <>< <>< <>< say you saw it in “Christian Community News” Magazine | Page 19 May/June 2016 May 2016 Budgeting Appointments Bible Study ▲One on One ☺Kids 1 ● Supplies Provided Monday Sunday Computer Class 2 Core Concepts Workshop Part 1 10 am-1pm * Wednesday 9 10 Advanced Coaching 10 am-12pm ♦ 16 17 Core Concepts Workshop Part 1 10 am-1pm * 11 Women of the Bible 1:15-3:30 pm 23 24 Advanced Coaching 10 am-12pm ♦ 30 Chronological Life of Jesus 1:30-3:30 pm Core Concepts Workshop Part 3 10 am-1pm * 26 Chronological Life of Jesus 1:30-3:30 pm Core Concepts: Interview Skills 9:30-12:30 28 27 10-11:30 am CLOSED By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday 2 Chronological Life of Jesus 1:30-3:30 pm By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ 6 7 Core Concepts Workshop Part 1 10 am-1pm * 8 By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ 13 J 14 J Kids Camp 15 21 Core Concepts Workshop Part 1 10 am-1pm * J 28 J Journey Kids Kids Camp Advanced Coaching 10 am-12pm ♦ By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ May/June 2016 | Page 20 Camp JWomen ofKids the Bible 16 J 22 Core Concepts Workshop Part 2 10 am-1pm * Women of the Bible 1:15-3:30 pm Camp JWomen ofKids the Bible 1:15-3:30 pm By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ 4 10-11:30 am 18 17 10-11:30 am By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ 23 Core Concepts Workshop Part 3 10 am-1pm * Chronological Life of Jesus 1:30-3:30 pm By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ 30 J 9:30-12:00 ● 11 10 Chronological Life of Jesus 1:30-3:30 pm By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ 29 Kids Camp Saturday 10-11:30 am ■ Chronological Life of Jesus 1:30-3:30 pm By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ 27 Core Concepts Workshop Part 3 10 am-1pm * 1:15-3:30 pm By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ 20 9 By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ Advanced Coaching 10 am-12pm ♦ Journey Kids Core Concepts Workshop Part 2 10 am-1pm * Women of the Bible 1:15-3:30 pm Friday 3 Women of the Bible 1:15-3:30 pm 26 10-11:30 am June 2016 1 19 21 20 31 Sunday 12 Core Concepts: Resume Writing 9:30-12:30 10-11:30 am Chronological Life of Jesus 1:30-3:30 pm By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ CLOSED Memorial Day 5 14 13 By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ 29 12 19 Women of the Bible 1:15-3:30 pm 9:30-12:00 ● 10-11:30 am ■ Chronological Life of Jesus 1:30-3:30 pm By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ Core Concepts Workshop Part 2 10 am-1pm * Women of the Bible 1:15-3:30 pm 25 Saturday 7 6 By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ 18 Friday Core Concepts Workshop Part 3 10 am-1pm * By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ 22 Thursday Core Concepts Workshop Part 2 10 am-1pm * Women of the Bible 1:15-3:30 pm By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ 15 Life Balance Kids Camp Journey Kids 5 4 By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ 8 J Career Services ■Bring Your Own Laptop * 3 Part Series (must be attended in order) ♦Core Concepts Prerequisite Tuesday 3 770-591-4730 Core Concepts: Resume Writing 9:30-12:30 25 24 10-11:30 am Core Concepts: Interview Skills 9:30-12:30 Kids Camp Chronological Life of Jesus 1:30-3:30 pm 10-11:30 am By Appointment: Weekday or Evening ▲ say you saw it in “Christian Community News” Magazine NEED A JOB? 770-591-9588 All sessions require pre-registration 48 hours in advance. 6551 Commerce Pkwy, Suite 300; Woodstock 30189 Join the thousands who have successfully obtained jobs through The Master’s Training Center! Subject: Creation In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth and populated the Earth with broccoli, cauliflower and spinach, green and yellow and red vegetables of all kinds, so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives. And God created the healthful yogurt that Woman might keep the figure that Man found so fair. And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat, and sugar from the cane and combined them. And Woman increased greatly in size. So God said, "Try my fresh green salad." And Satan presented Thousand-Island Dressing, buttery croutons and garlic toast on the side. And Man and Woman unfastened their belts following the repast. God then said, "I have sent you heart healthy vegetables and olive oil in which to cook them." And Satan brought forth deep fried fish and chicken-fried steak so big it needed its own platter. And Man gained more weight and his cholesterol went through the roof. Then God brought forth the potato, naturally low in fat and brimming with nutrition. And Satan peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy center into chips and deep-fried them. And Man gained more weight. May/June 2016 | Page 22 God then created a light, fluffy white cake, named it "Angel Food Cake," and said, "It is good." Satan then created chocolate cake and named it "Devil's-Food." Then using God's great gifts, Satan created specialty ice cream and donut chains. And Satan said, "You want chocolate with that?" And Man said, "Yes!" and Woman said, "and as long as you're at it, add some sprinkles." And they gained another 10 pounds. And Satan smiled. God then brought forth running shoes so that His children might lose those extra pounds. And Satan gave cable TV with a remote control so Man would not have to toil changing the channels. And Man and Woman laughed and cried before the flickering blue light and gained pounds. God then gave lean beef so that Man might consume fewer calories and still satisfy his appetite. And Satan created Fast Food and its 99-cent double cheeseburger. Then said, "You want fries with that?" And Man replied, "Yes! And super size them!" And Satan said, "It is good." And Man went into cardiac arrest. God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery. Then Satan created HMOs. <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< say you saw it in “Christian Community News” Magazine From the Master’s Training Center There is a reason for a picnic almost every weekend in early summer. Its not yet too hot and we are all happy to get outside after a cold winter. Each of these items will make you the show stopping hero! So put away those humdrum recipes that you are bored to serve, and try these out! Your friends will be going back for seconds… and maybe thirds! Summer Favorites!!! Corn Chowder 4 slices of bacon (cut before browning 2 stalks celery, chopped 1 carrot, chopped (don’t peel) 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic 1 TBL butter 4 TBL flour 32 oz chicken broth corn removed from 4 ears 1 red potato, chopped 1 Tea thyme Salt and pepper to taste 1/4 –1/2 c heavy cream In a Dutch oven, brown bacon pieces. Remove when crispy and set aside. Add chopped celery, onion, carrot, garlic & butter. Sauté’ until soft. Add flour and coat veggies well. Add chicken broth slowly in batches, allowing mixture to thicken. Add corn, potato, thyme, salt and pepper. Allow to simmer for about 20 minutes on low. Add cream at the end. Top with bacon. Layered Salad Berry Trifle 2 containers of fresh strawberries, sliced 2/3 container of blueberries 1 container raspberries, optional 1 lemon ½-3/4 c sugar ¼ c water Use whatever decorative bowl you have! Head of Lettuce, chopped 1 c celery, chopped 1 green pepper, chopped (to taste) 1 small Spanish onion, chopped fine 1 can water chestnuts, chopped 1 pack frozen peas 2 c mayo 2 tbl sugar (mix in mayo) 1 c shredded cheddar cheese 8 slices of bacon Begin with the bottom layer: evenly distribute lettuce. Then layer each items in order. Haven’t tried this one, but it was so nostalgic, I couldn’t pass it up! 2 boxes of instant lemon pudding, to net 4 cups 4 cups cold milk ½ angel food cake, in 12” cubes (can be hand torn) 1 pint whipped cream In saucepan, add 1 container sliced strawberries, juice of the lemon, ½ c sugar, water and allow to simmer for 5 minutes, or until the strawberries begin to turn soft. Taste to see if more sugar is added, (some berries are naturally sweet and do not need much sugar, while others are tart.) Then add 1/3 container of blueberries and allow to simmer for an additional 1 to 2 minutes. Allow mixture to cool before layering in the trifle. (To quicken the cooling process, transfer to a glass bowl and put into the refrigerator.) In a separate mixing bowl, prepare instant lemon pudding according to directions. Set aside until the pudding thickens. In a tall clear bowl or trifle dish, begin to layer the trifle in the following order: Coat the bottom of the bowl with lemon pudding, approx ½” Layer of angel food cake Pour cooled berry mixture by tablespoons over the cake. Concentrating first on the edges so the fruit can be seen from the outside of the bowl. Then lightly coat the middle. Add 1/3 container of fresh, sliced strawberries, again, concentrating on the edge of the glass bowl so the fruit can be seen, then lightly fill in the middle. Sprinkle a handful of blueberries in a similar fashion as the strawberries. Cover with about ½” of lemon pudding. Cover with about ½” of whipped cream. Begin layering process again with more angel food cake. You should end with two full stacks, ending with the lemon pudding. Take remaining whipped cream and spoon around the edge of the top, forming a well in the middle. Take the remaining of fresh strawberries and put in the middle of the trifle. Sprinkle the remaining blueberries on the top. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to set. The angel food cake will absorb the cooked fruit liquid… (Use pound cake if you make it a day ahead to avoid the cake from becoming too soggy.) say you saw it in “Christian Community News” Magazine | Page 23 May/June 2016 8:00pm JULY 11-15 9:00-12:00. 2295 BASCOMB CARMEL ROAD, WOODSTOCK, GA 30189 (770)926-9755 May/June 2016 | Page 24 say you saw it in “Christian Community News” Magazine Vacation Bible Schools First Baptist Canton June 13 - 17 2016 9:00 AM-12:15 PM Ages: 4 years old (by September 1, 2016) through 8th grade (grade completed) say you saw it in “Christian Community News” Magazine | Page 25 May/June 2016 New Victoria Baptist 770-926-8448 www.newvicbaptist.org 6659 Bells Ferry Rd, Woodstock 30189 Sunday Service 11am Sunday School 9:45am Pastor: John Harris REPEATING EVENT: Tuesday: 7:00pm Waist Management weight loss support group.
