Acrylic paint is a means of expression that lets you produce a wide variety of pictorial techniques and effects. In terms of
suppleness when it is dry, you can apply acrylic in thick layers or overlay it without the risk of it cracking or it drying poorly.
It acts just like real glue, you can incorporate other neutral materials to change its plastic appearance and create texture
(sand, marble powder, plaster, sawdust, polystyrene, etc.). Its ability to adhere means that is can be used on all kinds of
support: traditional supports like canvas, but also other recovered materials such as fabric, paper, untreated wood,
plastic, stone, etc.
The only rule to follow is not to paint on oily supports, which means those which are covered in oil paint, glycerophtalic
paints or varnish. In this case, we advise stripping, sanding and degreasing beforehand.
Combined with paints, textured gels and mediums will can create impastos, texture effects, glazes, with matt, satin or
shiny finishes.
This range of Lefranc & Bourgeois additives brings together the "essential" additives ranging from preparation of the
support to varnishing the painting. The additives can be mixed with all ranges of acrylic colour from the brand: LOUVRE
acrylics, FINE Acrylic, FLASHE.
The different layers of a paint:
There are 3 zones to identify when creating a painting on a support.

1/ Preparing the support:
This stage is very important if you want the paint to adhere immediately (and over time!). It all depends on the nature of the
support.
•
If it is porous, you will need to "seal" it, this means make the background waterproof with the help of a gel binder,
followed by a layer of GESSO.
•
If it is smooth, you will need to make it "rougher", either by sanding, or by applying a primer: GESSO. If the support is
made of glass or porcelain, there are special paints for this type of surface: GLASS & TILE, CERAMIC or VITRAIL.
•
If it is already painted, you will need to inquire about what type of paint it is:
- If it is oily paint (oil, glycero), you will need to strip it, since you cannot paint "non-oily" acrylic
on an "oily" support.
- If it is an acrylic or lazure painting, you can simply clean it with soapy water or alcohol.
2/ Applying the colour:
Acrylic paint can be used pure or diluted with water. You can mix additives to the paint in order to change its physical and
aesthetic appearance. The different additives available are shown further on.
3/ Varnishing:
It is always better to protect a painting, even one done in acrylics, in this way the varnish and not the paint takes the brunt
of any external attacks: cleaning, impacts, scratches, grazes, etc.
The delight of materials
Lefranc & Bourgeois acrylic additives give a different texture to the paste, in order to change the appearance of your painting.
From fluid to thick textures, you can mix the pastes in different ways and in all proportions, the results are intermediary materials.
Being concentrated resin-based, the pastes remain flexible to enrich your painting, thicken it to allow you to create impastos or
make it more fluid when applying glazes.
Reminder: for artistic purposes, all of the additives are non-yellowing, supple and cracks will not appear with age.

3D Gels :
3D gels give an ideal consistency to impastos and volume effects.
Use:
•You can mix them in all proportions with acrylic paints, and increase the
transparency of your work.
•Used pure, they can be used to produce collages on all types of
material, even the most rigid.
Two types of finish: Matt and gloss (which also increases the transparency of the
colours.)
You can obtain a satin finish by mixing the 2 mediums together (matt and gloss).
Available sizes: 120 ml and 250 ml tubes

Gels :
Gels are ideal for juxtaposing colours while leaving the brush strokes or painting
knife marks visible.
Use:
•You can mix them in all proportions with acrylic paints.
•You can also use them in the pure form, for collages and incorporating
materials (pigments, sawdust, shavings, powders, etc.).

Fluid mediums :
As the name indicates, these mediums make the paint more fluid, but at the
same time preserving a strong resin content, which makes it different to diluting
the paints with water.
Use: can be mixed in all proportions with acrylic paints. Leave the mix to stand
before applying it, in order to avoid bubbles forming.
Two types of finish: Matt and gloss (which also increases the transparency of the
colours.)
You can obtain a satin finish by mixing the 2 mediums together (matt and gloss).

Preparing the support:
The support is the framework of your creation, it is important to know its nature and characteristics in terms of porosity, suppleness ,
roughness, resistance to moisture, etc. Strengthening may prove necessary. The different additives available to achieve this are
shown below:
GESSO:
Primer for smooth, non-oily supports and a universal primer for porous supports (soft
wood, stone, plaster, cardboard), titanium white and acrylic resin base).
Characteristics: Impermeable (resists oil paint), supple (can be used on flexible
supports), adheres well (perfect adherence on smooth supports). GESSO also contains
calcium carbonate, which makes it rough and opaque, and is used to cover a dark
background, onto which you can apply light colours. 2 possible results: Rough (one
generous coat) or smooth (sand your support, then apply several thin layers and sand
in between each layer).
Available sizes: 500 ml,1 litre and 2.5 litre pots

LIANT-BINDER :
Artistic multiple use concentrated gel, very resistant over time, non-yellowing, satin finish,
translucent, supple, indelible and water resistant. Ready to use product, to be used
pure and undiluted to mix pigments, glue all types of material (fabric, sand, wood,
etc.). Transparent, universal primer for smooth, non-oily supports (plastic, glass,
hardboard) and porous supports (soft wood, stone, plaster, cardboard). Touch dry (for 1
mm) within 15 minutes, completely dry in 1 hour. Do not use on surfaces that are liable
to rust - Wash tools in water

MODELING PASTE:
Modeling paste allows you to create low relief and structure before painting begins.
You can mix it with acrylics in all proportions, to create impastos and work the paint in
thick layers. Flexible, it doesn't crack because it doesn't contain marble powder or
silica. Non-yellowing and indelible once dry. Matt, opaque finish.

Protect your painting:
In order to protect your work over time, it is necessary to varnish it once the painting is completely dry. This stage also allows you
to obtain the final appearance you require: gloss or matt appearance.
(Matt)
Acrylic varnishes:
(Gloss)
Permanent varnishes for acrylic or vinyl paints that will protect your paintings inside or
outdoors (sheltered). Two types of finish: matt or gloss. You can obtain a satin finish by
mixing the 2 mediums together (matt and gloss). Before varnishing, wait until the
painting is completely dry (1 week per mm of thickness). For a gloss varnish, it is
advisable to apply 2 thin coats, the first diluted at 20%, then the second at 10%,
respecting the 6 hours drying time between each layer. For a matt finish, apply two
coats of varnish: a first layer of gloss varnish (diluted at 10%) then a second coat of
pure matt varnish. Advice for applying the product: you can't start again with varnish
once you've spread it, as you risk making the varnish "cloudy" and leaving white,
clumsy marks. An acrylic varnish dries quickly, so you must apply it rapidly.
Do not apply varnish in the sun, in a ventilated area, or in temperatures greater than
25°C.
Acrylic varnishes are non-yellowing, flexible and irreversible once dry.
Available sizes: 120 ml and 250 ml pots.
Retarder medium:
Retarder mediums increase the drying time of acrylic paints, giving you more time to
work wet in wet on the tints and blending of colours. For large surfaces, you can
create washes while reducing the problem of drying times between the paint touched
up. You should not mix more than 20% of the retarding medium with the colours, as too
high a concentration could affect the properties of the paint.
