Light-emitting diodes, or LEDs as they are commonly referred to, are well known as an environmentally friendly lighting choice.
LEDs are a rapidly advancing technology that uses energy more efficiently compared to other lighting options. They comprise
small, but powerful sources of light that illuminate when electrons move through semiconductor materials.
The advantages of LED lighting include:
• Size and efficiency: Measuring 3mm to 8mm in size, they can be used singularly or as a part of a group. Their small size
makes them ideal to use in spaces that are too small for traditional lightbulbs. They only shine in one direction and produce
a fraction of the heat that fluorescent and incandescent lights do.
• Longevity: The lifespan of a high-power white LED is estimated to be between 20 000 to 50 000 hours. This compares
very favourably when compared to incandescent bulbs, which last for between 750 and 2 000 hours. Also, since LED’s don’t
contain any glass components, they are not vulnerable to vibration or breakage such as conventional glass bulbs.
• Lower temperatures: Most traditional globes waste most of their energy as heat – for example, an incandescent bulb
wastes 90% of its energy as heat. Since LEDs remain cool, they are far more energy efficient light sources.
• Energy saving: LEDs use up to 80% less energy when compared to incandescent bulbs. They require a low voltage power
supply and boast incredibly low power consumption.
