Chittagong Tel: (031) 501009, 502536 IMPACT OF THE GLOBAL CRISIS (Mid 2009) Global GDP is expected to shrink at both market exchange rates and in purchasing power parity terms in 2009, registering falls of 3% and 1.8% respectively. Global trade will contract in 2009 for the first time since 2001. The poor economic performance in the US and Europe will have a negative impact on Bangladesh's external sector, as the two regions import more than 50% of Bangladesh's commodities. The economic downturn in the Middle East will have a direct impact on overall household spending in Bangladesh, as the area is the country's largest source of overseas workers' remittances. The lower level of oil prices in 2009 relative to 2008 will lead to a modest reduction in Bangladesh's import bill, but it will not be enough to reduce the substantial gap that exists between exports and imports, and post trade deficits is therefore expected in 2009-10.
