MODIFICATIONS What Are Modifications? Modifications are substantial changes in what a student is expected to learn and demonstrate. Changes, may be made in the instruction level, the content, or the performance criteria. Such changes are made to provide a student with meaningful and productive learning experiences, environments, and assessments that are based on that individual's needs and abilities. Modifications require a change in the type and amount of work expected of the students. For example, a student may be working at a lower level than other students in the class. In other instances, the student may be working on a skill related to the skills upon which other students are focusing (Pierangelo & Giuliani, 2007). Modification might include changes in the following. Instructional level Content Performance criteria Accommodation and Modification Options Physical Arrangement of the Classroom Provide preferential seating (e.g., seated near the front of the room and away from distraction); such a location helps the student maintain better focus. Stand near the student when giving instructions. Have the daily routine in writing where it is easy to see. Include opportunities for physical activity in the schedule. Room decoration should directly relate to current curriculum being taughtallow students to make and post as much of the material as possible. Provide student with a stimuli-reduced environment.
