October 2, 2008 World's first resealable drinks can wins Can of the Year 2008. The world's first commercially-available resealable drinks can won the top prize in the 2008 Cans of the Year Awards, organised by The Canmaker magazine. Canmaker Ball Packaging Europe has been developing the design for more than five years. It prevents drinks from spilling after being opened and maintains carbonation. The Ball Resealable End (BRE) was launched on Coca-Cola's energy drink Burn in France earlier this year following market tests on other Coca-Cola drinks in Germany and the Channel Islands and is expected to be rolled out in North America soon. The Can of the Year trophy was presented by publisher of The Canmaker Allan Sayers to Ball Packaging Europe's chief operating officer Gerrit Heske, project manager Wolfgang Kasper and Ken Jackson, who is manager for promoting the application of the BRE internationally. Coca-Cola Enterprises was represented by Jesper Madsen and Hicham Echchgadda. The BRE also won the Gold award in the Two-Piece Beverage Cans category and the Silver award in the Ends, Caps, and Closures category. “We've been waiting for years to see the commercial application of a resealable lid on a drinks can so the BRE end from Ball is a worthy winner of the Can of the Year,” said John Nutting, editorial director of The Canmaker .“Making a success of a product like this is a huge undertaking, requiring not just innovative design but the use of highly-sophisticated manufacturing techniques requiring unprecedented quality control. “It also must meet Coca-Cola's stringent requirements that enable the BRE to be used within its highspeed filling operations. For the beer & beverage world this is the equivalent of putting a man on the Moon.” The Cans of the Year Awards ceremony was held during a gala dinner at The Canmaker Summit conference in Warsaw , Poland earlier this week. Cans of the Year has been organised by The Canmaker magazine since 1996 and annually recognises innovation in metal packaging design. Other novel metal packaging designs to receive awards were: • the first aerosol can for toothpaste developed by Tubex for GlaxoSmithKline's Aquafresh • a 5-litre pressurised beer keg from canmaker Huber for Stuttgarter Hofbräu • Coca-Cola's latest impact extruded aluminium bottle using decoration designed for the US market by Turner Duckworth and made by Exal • a highly-decorated DVD container from Glud & Marstrand • Crown Food Europe 's latest EasyLift lid for pet food cans • aluminium easy-open paté cans from Impress Metal Packaging for Hamé in the Czech Republic • a stylish olive oil can with an anti-drip spout from Pirlo in Austria • a cleverly designed paint can from Brazil 's Cerviflan Industrial e Comercial, and • a presentation container styled in the form of a 1950s radio from GM Metal Packaging in Hong Kong • winner of the prototype category was Rexam for its latest lightweight Fusion aluminium bottle design using drawn & wall-ironing techniques.
