RE-OPENING OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILWAY STATION WORLD
TRADE CENTER
One month ahead of schedule, New York Governor George Pataki and New Jersey Governor James
McGreevey officially reopened the PATH station, located within the former World Trade Center
building site, restoring a crucial rail connection between the states that was severed in the
September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
On a typical work day, 280 PATH trains carry approximately 1/3 of the Manhattan work force in and
out of the City, so it was critical to New York and New Jersey that this service be restored. The men
and women of the Port Authority, and its contractors, worked around the clock for 26 months to
complete this project, reopening the station ahead of schedule.
The transformers had to fulfill the following special requirements:

rectifier use

Overload capacity for traction use

Design for 12-Pulse-Operation with maximum difference in the LV-Systems of 0.5 %

Transformer design with enclosure protection class IP 23

Acceptance test of the complete system including rectifier at KEMA Philadelphia
WTW and our North American agents EDT (Electrical Design Technology, Inc.), were honored and
chosen by the Port Authority to supply the Power Transformers and Rectifier Transformers that
power the station and trains.
We are proud to have been a part of this project, and salute the resilience and dedication of the men
and women of the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey and all those that participated in its
completion.
