MERCER SLOUGH ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER (JUNE 20 – SEPTEMBER 2)

The outdoor environment takes center stage at Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center, a collaboration between the
City of Bellevue and Pacific Science Center. This LEED® Gold certified facility features spectacular views of the wetlands of
Mercer Slough Nature Park, as well as state-of-the-art laboratories, classrooms and hiking trails. Experience a summer of
outdoor adventure and environmental science at Mercer Slough.

Rhythms of Nature
Did you know that owls can fly without
making a sound, dragonflies spend most
of their lives underwater, and a bunny’s
ears are for more than listening? Dip for
aquatic creatures, search the wetlands
for animal signs and discover hidden
burrows as you uncover fascinating facts
about residents of the Slough. Hunt for
hidden habitats and observe awesome
oddities of animals all around you. Join
us for a week of discovery into how
adaptations help creatures survive!
Get in tune with the rhythms of nature!
Recognize patterns and sounds that
occur all around you—at the beach, in
our pond and in the forest. Investigate
the science of sound and how
different animals use sound to survive.
Experiment with sound waves, observe
tidal cycles and listen for bird calls on a
hike. Then, share your new knowledge
at a concert starring your own naturethemed songs and hand-made recycled
instruments. It’s going to be a rockin’

Did you know there are thousands of
secret geocaches hidden around our
region? That people all over the world
are creating their own local scavenger
hunts and sharing them over the
internet? This spring YOU can master
this outdoor sport. Find out how Global
Positioning System (GPS) satellites let
you pinpoint your location anywhere
in the world and become an expert in
the use of a GPS device. Canoe local
waterways and hike forested trails as
you seek out hidden geocaches. How

How healthy is your local water
source? From the streams of the
Cascade Foothills to the wetlands
of Mercer Slough, investigate the
macroinvertebrates and plankton that
live in our local waterways. Use nets and
niskin bottles to collect water samples
and then bring them back to the lab for
further study. Collect and analyze data
as you develop the skills that scientists
use to survey aquatic life.

Registration Dates
Camper Lunch Program
•Registration opens for Pacific Science Center Members on February 25 at 8:30 a.m.
We are pleased to offer this convenient option at Pacific
Science Center’s main campus for full-day campers only
(or campers participating in morning and afternoon half-day
camps). Substitutions are not available. View our menu online
at pacificsciencecenter.org/camps.
•Registration opens for the general public on March 1 at
8:30 a.m.
•Early bird registration ends April 30.
PRICING: After April 30, $30 added to price.
How to Register & Pay
•All registrations must be made online at
pacificsciencecenter.org/camps with Visa or MasterCard
payment.
•When registering, choose the grade level your child will be
entering in the fall.
•Full payment can be made when you register; otherwise, a
$100 non-refundable deposit per camp is required, with the remaining balance due by April 30.
Sign up for the Camper Lunch Program at the time of
registration. Lunch orders are not available by the day, and
all orders or cancellations must be made by 4 p.m. on the
Wednesday before your child’s camp start date.

Lunches are provided by Classic Catering, a preferred caterer for Pacific Science
Center for the past ten years. They are locally owned and have been catering for
over three decades in the Pacific Northwest.

•If a camp is full at the time of registration, you can add your
child to the waitlist. If an opening occurs, we will notify you by phone and email. Please do not call to check on your child’s waitlist status.
Pacific Science Center Members receive a $30 discount on all
summer camps. Register before April 30 to qualify for the early
bird discount.
•If the camp is listed as “Capacity Full” there are no waitlist
spots available.

Teddy’s Grand Adventure
Birds, Bugs and Bunnies
Legends of Polliwog Pond
Teddy’s packing for an adventure to
find out what it takes to be a scientist.
Embark on a journey with your new
stuffed friend, Teddy, and explore
the world of science careers! Each
evening, Teddy will venture out to make
discoveries and then return to share
photos, activities and stories with you
the next day. Practice treating Teddy’s
ouches at the doctor’s office and don
your parka for a scientific expedition to
the Arctic! Investigate animals with a
zookeeper, and then design an airplane
to soar through the clouds with a pilot.
At the end of the week of exploration,
Teddy will be ready to join you at home
for adventures of your own!

maps while combing the trails for the
plants, rocks and water that make the
wetlands so unique. By the end of the
week, your treasure chest will be filled
with special objects to take home!

Amusement Park Science
Cooking Up Science

camp is for you! Delve into pneumatics,
hydraulics, circuits and motors as you
con­struct miniature models of your
favorite amusement park rides. Harness
the forces of gravity to construct roller
coasters with complex loops, twists and
angles, heightening the fear factor while
keeping your marble on the track. No
amusement park is complete without
sweet treats, so use simple machines to
create sno-cones. Twirl, ride, bump and

Planet of the Decomposers
Science Myths: BUSTED!
(previously known as CSI: Decomposers)
This week is one giant science
experiment! Can you really slip on a
banana peel? Will eating pop rocks
and drinking soda really make your
stomach explode? Can ninjas really walk
on water? Using physics and chemistry
basics, design, tests and conduct trials to
prove or disprove various urban legends
and age-old misconceptions. Combine
the scientific method with wild curiosity
and plain old fashioned ingenuity as you
explode a week’s worth of myths.
How does a lowly fungus bring down a
whole tree? Did you know that there are
more organisms in one handful of soil than
there are humans on Earth? Investigate
the decaying side of nature as you canoe
through a wetland, explore a beach and
hike through an old growth forest. Probe
the forest floor and visit an organic farm to
see healthy soil at work. Conduct a variety
of experiments and mulch, mulch more.

Spy Academy. Your mission, should you

spy cohort to infiltrate Operation
Lightning Bolt. Create your own secret
alias and build gadgets to conceal your
true identity. Conduct experiments
to reveal counterfeit currency, detect
poison­ous substances and encrypt and
decipher top secret codes to expose
an enemy agent during this week of
adventure and intrigue.
Join Chess4Life and Pacific Science
Center for a week of chess and
computer sci­ence! Half of each day will
be spent with experienced Chess4Life
instructors where you will be taught at
your individual level of understanding
as engaging lessons make the strategic
game of chess come to life. Compete
in friendly tournaments that increase
reasoning, pat­tern recognition and math
skills. Spend the afternoon with Pacific
Science Center exploring an introduction
to computer science. Technology
instruc­tion combined with hands-on
projects will give you a look at the ins
and outs of programming and how the
internet works. Work with a team to
explore the fundamentals of building
a web page and create music and art
using code. Practice reading binary code
and investigate artificial intel­ligence to
see if you have what it takes to beat a
computer in a game of chess.
It’s wet, it’s wild and it’s all in the water!
From rivers to wetlands and lakes to
oceans, explore and study the many
aquatic ecosystems and the unique
creatures that inhabit them. Visit local
Puget Sound beaches to meet the
watery critters who live in tide pools.
Uncover the secrets of the salmon
life-cycle at a hatchery and in the wild.
Canoe the Slough and use dip nets
to collect tiny aquatic organisms for
investigation. By the end of the week,
you’ll discover why water is a perfect
place for animals to call “home!”

Wildlife Gone Wild
The hip bone’s connected to the...
what bone? Make your own life-sized
anatomy chart, taste food with your
nose and create a model of a cell as
you learn the basics of the human body.
Practice your bedside manner as you
master first aid basics, and glove up
for an “operation” when you dissect a
sheep’s eye to get a closer look at how
vision works. Get ready to explore the
ins and outs of a doctor’s day.
Take a walk on the wild side! Learn
how to track wild animals, then hop
on a tram tour to see large animals
roaming wild at Northwest Trek. Catch
creatures from our pond, spot water
birds while canoeing the Slough and
delve into herpetology with a live snake
visitor. Each day you will investigate a
different habitat, discover the creatures
that live in it and explore the amazing
adaptations that help them survive. Be
prepared to get up early when we leave
at 8 a.m. on Thursday for our safari to

ecosystems within the Puget Sound
region and investigate the plants and
animals that live there. Uncover the
unusual creatures found in the intertidal
zone of a beach, canoe through a

the many unique ecosystems in our

With an array of technology at your
fingertips, learn what remote sensing
is, how scientists use it, and how it can

data from the depths of our oceans

Use infrared technology to explore
how firefighters track wildfires. Set
up your own tracking experiment just
like biologists use to track animals in
the wild. Study satellite imagery of sea
ice and collect data to compare with
current sea surface conditions. Discover
what the Doppler effect and a police
radar gun have in common. This week
offers hands-on opportunities with
remote sensing technology and real-life
applications to remote control cars, GPS,

SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEENS
Science Educators in Training at all Summer Camp Locations
We are seeking responsible teen volunteers ages 14 –18 to provide valuable
assistance and mentoring of campers during the summer. Teen volunteers receive
training, build their professional resume, meet high school service requirements
and gain the rewarding experience of working with children and contributing to
their community. This experience is especially valuable for teens who are interested
in careers in science, technology or education. Teens must attend mandatory
trainings on Saturdays in May, and be able to commit to at least two weeks during
the summer.
How to Apply
The application process includes a written portion and recommendations,
followed by interviews. The application is available at pacificsciencecenter.org/
volunteers and is due March 31, 2016. Interviews will take place in late April,
and trainings will be held in May.

Birthday Parties
Celebrate your birthday with a variety of themed parties for
all ages! The celebration includes a private room complete
with decorations that match your selected party theme.
Experienced staff will dazzle guests with amazing science
activities, explorations and demonstrations! After your party
at Pacific Science Center, you and your guests are free to
enjoy the rest of the day exploring our exhibits.
Environmental Science & Technology Practicum
and Environmental Science Pathways
The Environmental Science and Technology Practicum and
Environmental Science Pathways programs offer exciting
multi-week sessions for middle and high school students to
explore skills and careers associated with environmental and
clean technologies. Each session includes hands-on research
investigations in field and laboratory settings, as well as direct
exposure to high level professionals in clean technology and
environmental science who share their cutting-edge work and
discuss educational pathways in their respective fields.

LOVE OUR SUMMER CAMPS?
Parents’ Night Out
Night Walks
Pacific Science Center offers a series of Parents’ Night Out
events throughout the year. Spend a night out (or in!) while
your child enjoys after-hours exploration of our exhibits,
hands-on activities and a live science, planetarium or laser
light show. Participants will be supervised in age groups by our
experienced and enthusiastic staff all evening.
Once a month, bring your family to examine skulls and
conduct experiments to discover the tricks nocturnal creatures
use to survive at night. Then head out into the dark to listen
for nocturnal creatures and participate in hands-on sensory
activities aimed at exploring the wetland at twilight. Offered
September through May for groups or families with children
ages 5 and up.
Preschools
Pacific Science Center and Mercer Slough Environmental
Education Center offer school year-long play-based preschool
programs for children ages 3–5. Proton Preschool in
downtown Seattle uses science as a catalyst for learning and
discovery. At Proton Preschool students explore the physical
world while utilizing the amazing resources Pacific Science
Center has to offer. Polliwog Preschool in Bellevue utilizes
320 acres of wetlands to explore seasonal themes and daily
activities that meet the developmental needs of early learners,
while fostering a love of nature and learning.
Scouts in the Wild
Scouts in the Wild are after school and weekend programs
targeted at groups of children in grades K–5. These groups
could include scouts, camp fire groups, homeschool
cooperatives or an informal group of friends. The programs
are loosely based on a variety of badge requirements for Girl
Scouts and Boy Scouts, but are fun and educational for any
group interested in a guided hike through the Mercer Slough
Nature Park.
NEW! Tech Workshop Coming This Spring
New to Pacific Science Center for grades 6 – 8, we will offer a
multi-week workshop series on Saturday mornings beginning
in April. Spend time diving deep into a subject and put
your new skills to the test with innovative challenges and
experiments.
