FCA School of Applied Sciences In the interdisciplinary structure of FCA, extension courses play the strategic role of improving the educational approach of the institution. Because teaching, research and extension are not closed areas, extension activities can both foster academic projects and originate from scientific research. The actions of the unit in the area of extension, developed locally, regionally and nationally, range from projects, courses and events for the community to contracts, agreements and the provision of specialized technical services. It is also worth noting the strong engagement of FCA alumni in more than a dozen academic associations managed by undergraduate students in the fields of culture, sports and entrepreneurship, among others. Undergraduate students 2,200 Master’s students 220 PhD students 13 Faculty 83 Staff 45 Established in 2009 in the city of Limeira (58 km from Campinas, the location of the main Unicamp campus), the School of Applied Sciences - FCA embodies an innovative academic proposal at the University. Its educational approach emphasizes interdisciplinarity as a resource that is able to develop student potential and thus train professionals who are capable of providing a more adequate response to the complex demands of the globalized societies of the 21st century, which require solutions arising from the convergence of different areas of knowledge. FCA abolished the traditional departmental structure, thereby creating an environment that is highly favorable to interdisciplinary dialogue. Undergraduate courses in business administration, sports science, engineering and nutrition are permeated by subjects of a general common basic core of universal knowledge to provide a consistent humanistic education and promote an interdisciplinary approach among the different areas of knowledge. In line with its distinct educational approach, FCA graduate programs also have an interdisciplinary nature that combines the different skill sets of its Faculty. The master’s program options include Nutrition, Sports and Metabolism Sciences; Operations Research; the Inter-Unit Program in Science and Technology Policy (in partnership with the Unicamp Department of Science and Technology Policy); and the Interdisciplinary Program in the Humanities and Applied Social Sciences. FCA also offers a doctorate in Nutrition, Sports and Metabolism Sciences. The academic production of the School is compatible with those of older educational and research units at Unicamp. Contemporary and aligned with a knowledge production and transfer model adopted by other global innovative institutions, FCA anticipates trends in education and plays a pioneering role in the history of Unicamp.
