The unit can be mounted on a wall or in a corner. The optimal mounting height for the Detector is 2.1 m. You can install the unit at heights between 1.1 m and 3.1 m. Ensure that the detector has a clear line of sight over the entire area to be protected. Infrared light does not pass through solid objects. Mount the detector in a location where an intruder is most likely to walk across the Detector pattern (side to side). When mounting the unit in a corner, the wide-angle lens is recommended. Do not mount the unit where it will be exposed to direct sunlight, heating or cooling sources or high humidity areas which may cause condensation on the lens. MOUNTING Removing the detector cover 1. 2. To remove the cover, place the tip of a small flat-blade screwdriver in the bottom of the unit between the cover and the base. Gently prise the cover off. An optional fixing screw is provided for extra security. If the screw is installed at the bottom of the unit, remove the small screw cover and unscrew the security screw. Save the small parts for use later during installation. Caution. While the cover is off, do not touch the pyro detector or circuit board components with you fingers or with tools. Handle the circuit board by the edges only. Installing the Detector base During base installation, you may wish to remove the circuit board while drilling or punching the mounting base for cable entry. Removing the circuit board is not mandatory. 1. Drill or punch holes for the screw and cable entry points provided in the base. Refer to the figure on the next page. 2. Pass the power and alarm signal wires through the entry hole you punched in the base. 3. Attach the base to the wall using four mounting screws. 4. Use silicon gel to seal any holes around the wires to prevent air draughts and keep insects out. This reduces the likelihood of false alarms. 5. If the circuit board was removed earlier, install it in its original location. 2 5420/90 Passive Infrared Motion Detector Installation Instructions Connecting power and alarm wiring 1. 2. 3. Connect a regulated DC power source to the terminals marked +12V and 0V. Observe the correct polarity. Connect wires from your alarm unit control panel input to the terminals marked Alarm N/C. The contacts are normally closed; they open when the Detector is in alarm mode. If you are using the cover tamper feature, connect the terminals marked Tamper N/C to the alarm system. The contacts are normally closed; removing the cover opens the contacts. ADJUSTING THE CIRCUIT BOARD HEIGHT The initial location setting for the circuit board depends on the mounting height of the motion detector. See the figure on the next page. 1. Align the marking for the mounting height on the circuit board with the mounting height notch on the detector base. 2. Press on the circuit board until it seats in the two retainer clips. 3. If needed, you can change the angle of detection by sliding the circuit board up or down on the mounting base. For example, you might wish to avoid a heat source. One way to achieve this is to slide the circuit board up to reduce the detection range. The figure below shows the effect of raising and lowering the circuit board. 3 5420/90 Passive Infrared Motion Detector Installation Instructions SETTING DETECTOR OPTIONS The factory sets the circuit board jumpers (LK1, LK2 and LK3) for typical installations. You can change the jumper settings to suit the requirements at the installation site. The range should always be set to the lowest setting that provides good detection coverage. At times it might be unavoidable to install the detector in a difficult environment. Pulse count is a means of adjusting the number of pulses received before an alarm is generated. This also has the effect of adjusting the number of alarm steps. Set the Range and Pulse links according to your application (see Setting Detector Options). The factory settings are Low Range, 3-4 Pulse count (low sensitivity) and LED ON. 2. Ensure that the mounting height adjustment is set correctly. Refer to Adjusting the Circuit Board Height. 3. Replace the Detector cover. 4. Apply power and wait for the LED to extinguish (approx. 30 seconds). 5. Conduct a walk test by slowly walking across the protected area and observing the LED. An alarm should occur after a maximum of 3 to 4 normal walking steps at a distance of 12m from the detector. 6. Stop and wait for the alarm LED to extinguish before you continue walk testing, continuous motion in the protected area will keep the alarm LED constantly on. 7. Observing the LED for pre-alarm pulses takes the guess work out of detection coverage. Short LED pulses indicate detection of infrared below the alarm threshold level. The number of pulses needed to cause an alarm can be set using the Pulse link. 8. Adjust your Range and Pulse links to suit your installation. Always use the lowest range and the highest pulse count that will guarantee good coverage. This helps minimise the possiblity of false alarms. 9. To avoid a heat source, reduce the range by changing the angle of detection. One way of achieving this is to slide the circuit board up, thus setting the height adjustment to a higher setting than the actual mounting height. Note: Sliding the circuit board up or down changes the angle of detection.
