CT-DRYER
WORKING PRINCIPLE
The Hosokawa CT-dryer is a conical vertical ribbon dryer
especially designed for drying of granules, powders, filter
cakes and granulating of powders.
Central single or double helicoidal ribbons ensure a constant motion and move the whole
batch, which results in high heat transfer and short drying times.
All the experience of Vrieco-Nauta® and Cyclomix mixer/dryers has been putted to developed
this dryer.
The products being dried are subject to minimal mechanical en thermal stress. Therefore even
fragile and heat sensitive products can be mixed with this mixer.
The Hosokawa CT dryer is a conical vacuum dryer which is developed to:
ƒ
reduce drying times
ƒ
reduce building height
ƒ
reduce maintenance costs
The CT dryer is available with different rotor and vessel to suit the best to customer
requirements.
Research in laboratory with some products, has shown that the heat transfer rate could be
improved up to 50% compared to other dryers due to the design of the Hosokawa helicoidal
ribbon rotor.
The CT vacuum dryer is a contact dryer. Heat energy is basically transferred into the product
through the jacketed vessel wall causing solvents or residual moisture to evaporate.

The helicoidal ribbon transports the product, helps the vapours escaping to the surface and
provides at the same time a continuous exchange of product in contact with the vessel wall.
Fields of application
This selection chart below illustrates what are the possible applications of the CT and of the
Vrieco- Nauta® dryers.
Drying Rate
Dry powder …… Wet powder ….. Paste ….. Slurry ……. Suspension
Each of the above dryers has his specific field of application and benefits. Our specialists can
assist you selecting and evaluating the most suitable technologies to handle your products. n our
laboratory in Doetinchem, both types of dryers are available for testing.
Main features of the CT dryer:
The Hosokawa CT Dryers are built as totally enclosed systems and when operated under full
vacuum they offer the following advantages:
ƒ
Fast drying time with quick and efficient removal of
vapours
ƒ
Total product in movement during drying, so high
heat transfer
ƒ
Compact design with reduced height
ƒ
Low end moisture achievable even with bonded
moisture
ƒ
Recovery of pure solvents is possible
ƒ
Transmission completely outside the vessel
ƒ
No bearings or seals in the vessel
ƒ
Special outlet valve to insure deep vacuum
ƒ
Full compliance with international standards and
guidelines like FDA, cGMP, GAMP, EHEDG
ƒ
Customized seal and Mechanical seal design including
sterile versions
ƒ
Automated cleaning solutions with our famous
robotised Cyberjet and our patented CIP filter and CIP Skids
HOW PROCESS WORKS
Heat energy is basically transferred to the product from a
heated jacket causing solvents and moisture residues to
evaporate. A central helicoidal ribbon refreshes the product
on the heated vessel wall and assists the vapours to escape
to the surface.
The jacket can be heated by media like steam, hot oil, water, etc.
A vacuum system holds the vessel under constant vacuum and removes the vapours through a
dust filter fitted on the top of the vessel. The vacuum conditions allow evaporating vapours at
lower temperatures which enables to dry heat sensitive products.
For recovery of solvents a condenser together with a receptacle will be provided. It can be
installed before but also after the pump depending on the solvents.
The moisture of the product can be controlled by means off:
ƒ
Weighing the condensate
ƒ
Taking samples without breaking the vacuum
As an overview, we can mention the following processes
ƒ
Vacuum drying of temperature sensitive materials
ƒ
Vacuum drying of filter cakes and wet powders
ƒ
Chemical reactions such as alkalisation, crystallisation, etc.
ƒ
Wet agglomeration and granulation
ƒ
Sterilisation of products
ƒ
Homogenising under vacuum
ƒ
Cooling
It is also possible to combine several processes in one vessel offering tremendous savings in
investment cost, labour and space.
