Ceramic Metal Halide Lamps
& Electronic HID Ballasts

March, 2014
Why Ceramic Metal Halide?
Initially, two big specification points…
• Color Quality
– CRI of 85-90+ compared to mostly 65-70 for
quartz MH
– Much improved lamp to lamp color
consistency as well as consistency over life
• Maintained Light
– Lumen maintenance of 80%+ compared to
65-75% for quartz MH
– Higher mean lamp efficacy
Thus a great solution for retail lighting, where growth
multiplied through track and downlighting!

1995-2005: A Decade of Expansion
A CDM proliferation into more lamp shapes and wattages
20W, 22W, 39W, 50W, 70W, 100W, 150W, 200W, 250W, 320W, 400W…
• Including CDM lamps
retrofittable into existing
MH, HPS fixtures
CDM-Tm
• Outdoor applications
begin to arise, but retail
still the mainstay

As CDM Lamps Began to secure a Foothold…
• Electronic HID (eHID) ballasts begin a rapid evolution,
with size and cost both decreasing
• But Why Do We Need eHID Ballasts?
– Unlike fluorescent where simply using an electronic
ballast yields more light output of a lamp, or same
light for lower energy.
– The key is to understand why CDM lamps are used
4
March, 2014
Why eHID? – 2 key operating characteristics
1. Constant lamp power
Regardless of line
voltage variations (e.g.
108-305V)
Regardless of lamp
voltage rise over life
2. Precise, prescribed starting, warmup & operation
5
March, 2014
Why eHID?
1. Constant lamp power
2. Precise, prescribed
starting, warm-up &
operation
• Color Control
• Maximized Life
• Improved lumen
maintenance
• Energy savings too
• Better quality of light
• Lowest total cost of ownership
CDM is primarily chosen for its color properties. The best
way to maximize those is with eHID ballasts. Energy
savings
is
an
added
benefit.
6

Now a myriad of eHID ballasts available – usually
several size/shape options for each lamp wattage

accordingly
• Obstacles on footpaths may be seen more easily
Energy & Cost Efficiency
• Reduces the required amount of light
• Increases the required distance between fixtures/poles
• Save up to 40% energy over High Pressure Sodium
• Save up to 50% energy over Quartz Metal Halide

Example Opportunity – replace existing high wattage metal halide
with lower wattage ceramic metal halide
• Target: Car Dealerships
• Why? Because car dealers use
lots of energy and generally keep
their lights on all night long
• Recommended change: Existing
1000W MH replaced with 315W
or 210W MasterColor Elite
Medium Wattage CDM lamps and
Electronic Ballasts.
• Typical saving calculation:
29
March, 2014
• 110 system lumens/watt
• 30khrs lamp life
• High CRI
• 3000K & 4000K, open or
enclosed rated versions
Energy Saving Calculation Example – point

MasterColor CDM Elite
Medium Wattage
On top of superb color quality and color rendition, substantial energy savings are achievable:
•
Existing fixture:
Lamp
Ballast
Total
1000W
80W
1080W per fixture
•
New fixture:
Lamp
Ballast
Total
315W
26W
341W per fixture
•
Energy Savings: 1080W – 341W = 739W (68% energy savings)
•
Energy Cost Savings*: 739W x 3,285 hrs/yr x $.08/kWHr = $194 per fixture, per year
•
Add’l Maintenance Savings: Avg Lamp Life (315W) = 30 khrs vs. 10 to 12 khrs (existing
1000W)
*Assumes operation of 9 hrs/day, could be higher or lower depending on specific schedule per location and season. Energy rate assumption of 8 cents
per kWHr is also variable by location.

Installed ~70 fixtures CDM Elite MW with dimming. School color now look bright red as it
should be, instead of burgundy. Lights are dimmed often and sometimes part of the
