The new Career Management module:
helping you to choose your direction
This module is aimed at any Stage 2 student in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences who
does not yet know what they want to do after university. It focuses on how people approach career
planning, with self-awareness and occupational awareness as core elements. This module will help
you to develop the ability to plan ahead and navigate your long term career goals.
What is it?
Career Management is a 20 credit module completed over the course of the academic year. The
module will enable you to understand and apply theories relating to career management, to identify,
select and make effective use of relevant careers information and to understand how your own
personality type can influence your decision making.
Through engaging with this module you will be able to:

Select and use defined career management skills and attributes to advance your career
thinking and lifelong learning.

Identify and reflect on the skills and knowledge gained through your current course of study
and relate these to a workplace context.

Market yourself effectively to prospective employers when preparing for all aspects of
recruitment and selection including CVs, application forms and interviews.

Use existing and new knowledge to create and develop a personal career plan to support
your progression beyond Higher Education.
How does it work?
You will attend timetabled seminars, workshops, lectures and study groups over both semesters.
The assessment consists of a written report in semester 1 and a choice of a presentation, video
poster, personal website or blog (constructed over course of the module) in semester 2.
This module differs from NCL2007 - the Careers Service stage 2 Career Development Module (CDM)
as CDM involves using work experience, volunteering or a part-time job to count towards your degree.
If you do intend to undertake a placement, you can find out more about CDM at:
