Description: Boston University supports two skating teams that are
considered club sports. There are close to 50 skaters who belong
to the BUFSC, and 35 of those are chosen to represent Boston
University on the competitive figure skating team. The team (made
up of freestyle skaters and ice dancers) competes in the Eastern
Conference in the hopes of qualifying for the U.S. Intercollegiate
Team Figure Skating Championships. Boston University is the 2009
and 2010 U.S. Intercollegiate champions. BU has a competitive
synchronized skating team that also competes in the Eastern
Conference and has qualified for the U.S. Synchronized Skating
Championships for the past several years. The team is ranked ninth
in the nation and is comprised of 20 skaters. BU has ice time
available six days a week to support both teams. The figure skating
team has a full-time coach, and the synchronized skating team
has two coaches who work with the team twice a week. There are
skaters who attend Boston University who are full-time students and
are still actively competing at the regional, sectional and national
levels. They supplement their training at the nearby Skating Club of
Boston. There are several other opportunities for skaters who don't
want to compete but stay involved with skating. BU has two
exhibitions and a test session every year, and there are
opportunities to coach at nearby facilities. The club is involved in
several volunteer activities in the community to give back and to
create team bonding.

The Colgate Figure Skating Club is a growing organization
at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. The club was
originally founded with the intention of keeping former
figure skaters active in college while also giving back to the
community through the “Skate at the 'Gate” learn-to-skate
program. While the club still enjoys teaching local youth
the skate, it has shifted its emphasis toward collegiate
competitions over the past three years. The Colgate Figure
Skating Club practices at Starr Rink on Colgate's campus 2–
4 times a week and participates in the U.S. Figure Skating
Eastern Intercollegiate competitions. Additionally, the club
works out together off ice, puts on an ice show each year
and will be starting a synchronized skating team this year. It
is the goal of the club to expand its membership and
continue giving college athletes a place to continue
skating.

ice dance. The team typically competes at three regional
competitions per season and has qualified for the U.S.

consistently for the past seven seasons, winning or placing
every time. We offer an opportunity for skaters to continue
the sport they love at the level they desire in a supportive
and enthusiastic environment. Dartmouth's unique quarter
system ("the D-Plan") allows skaters great flexibility in terms
of both academics and skating, whether this entails taking
time off to maintain a high level of national competition,
studying and skating abroad, or simply continuing to skate
at Dartmouth's beautiful Thompson Arena while
maintaining a regular academic schedule in Hanover. If

games throughout the season, and we host our own

disciplines of skating, and we invite skaters from the

The Robert Morris University collegiate synchronized skating
team was developed by Marsha Snyder in 2006. Marsha is
a Miami University alumnae and competed on the Miami
synchronized skating team under the direction of Vicki Korn
from 1999-2003. She is also the synchronized skating
director and choreographer for the Steel City Blades and
RMU ISC synchronized skating development programs. The
Robert Morris University skating team is a club sport and
practices twice a week on Friday afternoons and Saturday
mornings. RMU supports the team financially and allows
skaters attending any Pittsburgh-area university and/or
four-year college to participate in the club/team.
Participant skating levels range from novice- to senior-level
moves in the field and dance. There is no minimum skating
level required to participate on the team. The synchronized
skating team participates in several Midwest and Eastern
Section competitions, including the Eastern Sectional
Synchronized Skating Championships. The club also
participates in Eastern Section intercollegiate competitions.
RMU has been growing in size and popularity over the past
10 years and has a wide variety of majors to offer. RMU is
located 20 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. RMU Island
Sports Center has three ice surfaces (one Olympic and two
regular), offering regular freestyle and public sessions with
several national-level coaches as well as Olympic pairs
champion Elena Valova. All registered RMU students
receive free public ice and discounted freestyle sessions at
RMU ISC. For more information on the facility, go to

Team Excel's collegiate team was founded in an effort to
provide student athletes with the opportunity to pursue a
competitive synchronized skating career while attending
the college or university of their choice. Thus, Team Excel's
collegiate line does not represent a particular college or
university, and welcomes undergraduate and graduate
students from the entire New England area. This season, our
team is comprised of skaters from colleges in
Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine.
Team Excel's collegiate line is also fully funded by The Team
Excel Collegiate Scholarship, which was created to assist
athletes in financing a competitive synchronized skating
career at one of the premier figure skating clubs in the
country while they attend college. The scholarship provides
funds to qualified skaters for ice and coaching fees,
clothing and travel. Skaters are required to make an initial
deposit, which is refundable upon the completion of their
full commitment to the team. The scholarship makes it
possible for the team to train as if it were at a large
university, but athletes have the ability to attend any of the
many New England colleges or universities that suit their
academic needs.

The University of Maryland Figure Skating Club became a
recognized club sport three years ago. We are well
received by the university, and we receive pretty good
funding from the university as well. Our program has
freestyle sessions once a week for anyone who wants
come, including those who have never skated before and
simply wish to learn. We also have our synchronized skating

taken seriously, is lots of fun and is a good way to make a

We have three different ways a skater can be active with
the team. We are mainly a competitive freestyle team but
also offer recreational skating and are trying to rebuild our
synchronized team. (We won’t have team for this season.)
For competitive freestyle skating, we practice two nights a
week for an hour each night (Monday and Tuesday). We
have ice in Bloomington from October to March. The rest of
the year the team practices in Columbus or Indianapolis.
We have five girls on the freestyle team. Recreational
skating is come and go as you please, no competing. We
have 12 members planning on skating "rec.” As part of
being a club sport on campus, we accept everyone who
wants to participate. As a member of the team, we work a
community service event each semester. (We usually help
out with “Skate with Santa” and other things at the rink.)
We also have fundraising events, team dinners and other
social events outside of skating. Many of the girls on the
team also instruct at learn-to-skate classes and teach
private lessons for the younger kids.

Ohio University is a public university located in Athens,

comprised of local skaters, university staff members and
college students. The Ohio University learn-to-skate

The University of Illinois synchronized skating program
began in 2001. Over the past 10 years, we have added an
open collegiate team to our existing collegiate team and
recently transitioned our two teams into senior and
collegiate. This expansion into new divisions is consistent
with our mission to "achieve continuous growth, individually
and collectively, in an inclusive environment that fosters
unconditional respect and support." Helping propel the
organization forward is our excellent coaching staff.
Audrey Kamm, five-year coach of IllinoiSkating, is a 2005
Miami graduate. She helped coach the collegiate team to
its first medal in 2007 and a second-place finish at the 2009
U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships. She is the head
coach of the senior team and assistant coach for the
collegiate team. Shawna Ludy, new to IllinoiSkating this
season, comes to us from the Haydenettes. She skated with
the Haydenettes, coaches the Mini Mates, trained the
Lexettes and coached the University of New Hampshire.
Shawna is the head coach of collegiate and the assistant
coach for senior. In addition to coaches, the team is
managed by a student-run executive board. The board
consists of a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer
and junior executive board member. This elected group of
students works on all administrative aspects of the
organization, from booking travel arrangements to
creating budgets, from planning fundraisers to reserving
practice ice. Serving on the board offers skaters an
opportunity to have a leadership role on their team.
Outside of the executive board, there are many other
ways for skaters to develop in both life skills and skating
skills. All our skaters are full-time college students, and to us,
that comes first. In having to balance the rigorous
schedules of skating and school, our members learn
effective time management skills. We also promote
Page 29
continual individual improvement. Our skaters continue
testing moves, dance and freestyle throughout their four
years at Illinois, with many passing senior tests before they
graduate. We are proud to say that IllinoiSkating alumni
are well-rounded, successful young women who are wellequipped to enter the professional world.

Description: The Western Michigan University synchronized skating
program is entering its 16th season of synchronized skating and is
proud to offer competitive teams in both the senior and collegiate
divisions while still maintaining a fun and supportive atmosphere.
While we do have two separate teams, we skate together once a
week and participate in many other activities, allowing us to
function as one tight-knit group. We are a fully run student
organization with a five-member executive board that is voted on
each year by the skaters.
We receive some funding from the university, but the amount
varies each year. The teams also participate in many fundraisers
throughout the year to offset the costs associated with skating.
Along with participating in fundraisers, we are an active
Page 34
organization across WMU’s campus and the Kalamazoo
community. While we are affiliated with the university, it is not
necessary to attend WMU to skate on the synchro teams.
At Western Michigan, skating doesn't have to end after
graduation! The WMU alumni team (made up of all WMU
synchronized skating alumni) is the first of its kind. It is in its fifth year
of competing in the adult division.

California Figure Skating, formerly known as the Berkeley
Figure Skating Club (BFSC), was founded in September
2003 when two dedicated skaters joined together to
promote figure skating at UC Berkeley. The team is a
growing group of college students who love figure skating
and wish to compete throughout their busy college years.
In its first year of establishment, the team already qualified
to compete at the U.S. Intercollegiate Team Figure Skating
Championships in Amherst, Mass., and achieved a
seventh-place finish. Since then, Cal Figure Skating has
qualified to compete at every U.S. Intercollegiate
Championships. After working hard all year to recruit
skaters and organize an active club, Cal Figure Skating
received the UC Berkeley Student Group Dedication to a
Cause Award. Since October 2004, Cal Figure Skating has
been an official sport of UC Berkeley. In addition to the
competitive scene, Cal Figure Skating is also developing a
recreational side through organizing skate nights, during
which team members teach skating techniques. We also
welcome organizations to contact us for co-hosting skating
events while we provide lessons. Cal Figure Skating
welcomes skaters of all levels looking to compete or just
enjoy the sport recreationally.
