Why are the kids playing games on the ice? Games are a great way to reinforce skills that have been learned. Meaningful practice is an important part of learning. The application of a skill, takes the learning to a deeper level. If a child is in a relay race that requires bunny hops, not only will he/she need to consider how to do a bunny hop, but also they need to apply what they have learned about how to use their legs, body, and arms to meet their goal. That automatically reinforces the skills required for power and flow. When a person plays the hokey-pokey, the skills of balance and extension from a variety of directions and balance points are increased. What people learn from games is amazing! (and FUN!) Enjoy watching your child as he/she is participating, learning, and having fun. I’m already a member of the club, what should I be signing my child up for next? If you are already a member of the BGSC, the Board and its coaches recommend that your child skate 2 times a week for 30 minutes with instruction in the next six week session.. Fun Games to Play on the Ice !!!! 1 of 2 Beginner Youth Skating Sharks and Minnows-- Just as one does in swimming, skaters practice the skills of flow, power, agility, flexibility, speed, and quality movement. The minnows work hard to out maneuver the tricky sharks that are attempting to catch them. Duck Duck Goose-- This game is played on the ice just as it is off. It reinforces, edges, speed, and agility. Relay Races-- When racing in skating, skaters a given a skill to complete during the race. Skaters on a team, work together to complete the task faster than the other team. Hokey-Pokey -- Skaters enjoy the silliness of working on balance and control with quality movement, in order to hold and shake at the appropriate times in the game. Often times, skaters practice their current level of skill of spinning in addition to trying a type of spin that they have would like to try out. Grand March – The grand march is a traditional skating game in which a skater and his/her partner make a bridge with their hands and the remainder of the group travels between them (under their arms) and adds to the bridge. The game continues as a follow the leader type of a game. Sometimes is seems like learning the basics can be the most difficult, keep on trying! As we say at our house, “falling down is part of the experience!” If you have any questions, please submit them to mkrueger@wcesc.org or place them in an envelope in our club mailbox in the skate shop. We will work with the coaches to provide answers to help you and your skater in your journey. 2 of 2
