PROGRAM UPDATES
1. Associated Student
Government: Sean Dadashi
 Wednesday, April 23 - International Day
 Week of May 12 – ASG elections
 Smoke-free campus resolution presented to ASG – some questions
but general support.
 Matan Goldstein is creating a Strategies for Textbook Affordability
Committee, open to anyone.
 The first edition of the student newsletter, “Hawk Herald,” is
available for reading.

Continuing Education: Jose
Vargas
 Chancellor Hernandez hosted a lunch with employees at OEC
today (good dialog).
 The letter of intent to become an authorized education center has
been received and approved. Next, OEC will need to do additional
reports and research to complete the study.
 Job Fair held at OEC on Friday with 18 employers and 350 students
participating.

Classified Advisory Group:
Zina Edwards
 The last Hawks meeting included a presentation and demonstration
on security and safety from Al Chin, Devon Trahan and Don Maus.
 The group voted to donate $175 as a tee sponsor for the golf
tournament.

Communications: AnnMarie
Librescu
 Saturday’s Trig Star event included a media interview with Juan
Vazquez that aired on Monday, April 21, on “Daybreak OC.”
 SCC BRAG is participating at the May 8 Business Expo sponsored
by the Orange Chamber – going green is the theme.
 Advertising dollars will be experiencing a cut, but ads are
scheduled to run at Main Place in the summer.
5.
Technology: Curt Childress
 Discussion is in the works to replace networking equipment in
buildings A, B, C, D, S and U. Nothing has been decided at this
time.
Academic Senate and classified constituencies were
asked to provide feedback from their groups.
Council suggested the group work with the district
committee, possibly joining that committee for a
collaborative effort.
Note: a drill is being scheduled in May, with a table
top exercise.
 May is Update Your Web Page Month.
Budget:
 Two open forums will be scheduled during flex week for input on
priorities for classrooms, student support and employees.
Facilities:
 The softball field is almost complete; netting is being installed and
the turf will go in on Friday or Saturday.
 Science building is on schedule.
 Maintenance and Operations building and parking construction
should begin in 1 ½ months.
 On May 2nd the college name will be placed on the monument at the
corner of Jamboree and Santiago Canyon.

Student Success Committee discussion included:
 Basic Skills Planning Matrix (receiving feedback from Academic
Senate)
 Placing the basic skills sub-committee in the shared governance
manual
 Academic probation programs
Student Services:
 Community Services schedules are out with over 50 College for
Kids classes
 CTE Teach grant has been approved for 2008-09 in the amount of
$200,000 (focus on water utility, public works and arborist)
 Senior Day welcomed over 700 students from local high schools
 AmeriCorp hosted over 200 6th graders from Olive, Fletcher and
Riverdale for a career day
10. Educational Master Plan
Committee/Academic Senate:
Rosi Enriquez
 Basic Skills Initiative has been approved.
 State Plenary theme was Forging Alliances for Action, including
collaborative prioritization
 The budget component needs to be included in the EMP. Steve
Kawa and the deans need to meet to determine operational costs
included in the master plan.
 Morrie Barembaum is president-elect of the Senate
 Senate approved motion for exceptions to academic regulations
(college committee) – exceptions to degree requirements.
11. President: Juan Vázquez
Chancellor’s Cabinet is looking at not spending as much money for the
spring convocation. (mini-penguin fest, district—wide disaster drill)
Send ideas for alternatives for the all-district or
college spring convocation activity to Juan Vazquez.
