AGENCY GOALS & OBJECTIVES: The promise of Susan G. Komen is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. DEPARTMENT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: The Community Health Department manages the grants, education and outreach programs that represent the statewide outreach efforts of the affiliate and are responsible for the activities that directly relate to the promise of Susan G. Komen. The grants program strives to identify, support, and fund innovative grant partners that offer a comprehensive range of breast health services from screen and treatment to support services across barriers that prevent people from receiving life-saving treatment. The education and outreach program, in conjunction with the volunteer program, provides educational material and programming across the state to breast health providers, breast cancer survivors, and the community. Interns will have the opportunity to work with the one of the largest affiliates in the Susan G. Komen network, the global leader of the breast cancer movement. In addition, they will learn a great deal about breast cancer, one of the most common cancers in women, and its effect on the Maryland community. Interns will participate in a variety of activities including: Developing and implementing breast cancer educational programming Providing support to annual grant process Facilitating purchase orders for Komen education material Assisting in conducting needs assessments Representing the organization in the community at health fairs, coalition meetings, etc. Providing staff support for special events Writing information and articles for web site and newsletters Assisting with recruiting new volunteers while strengthening and building upon existing relationships Assisting in building relationships with priority populations and in targeted areas in Maryland Assisting in state and federal breast cancer advocacy efforts Special projects What are the skills and qualities you seek in an intern?
