Job Description Job Title: Editorial Services Manager Submit Resume to: Recruiting@spe.org SUMMARY Responsible for all editorial aspects of SPE’s peer-reviewed publications and SPE books. Ensures that SPE books and journals adhere to publications deadlines and manages outsourced publication projects as needed. Works with SPE Editorial Review and Book Development Committee’s leadership to execute publication strategies. Recommends changes in strategy as appropriate and provide metrics to illustrate performance. Stays up-to-date on current trends and suggests new publication ideas based on market research. Manages editorial staff and processes. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Develop, train and maintain a group of contract and staff copy editors and proofreaders to support various publications projects Maintain the SPE style manual and recommend updates as needed Serve as staff liaison to Editorial Review and Book Development Committees Suggest new book ideas based on market analysis; provides analysis of ideas suggested by the committee Conduct market scanning and research as input into decisions about whether SPE should undertake certain books projects or where gaps exist that SPE could fill Provide technical guidance in editing and proofreading manuscripts; supervise work of staff and freelancers to ensure quality and timely performance Proactively communicate with appropriate peer-review committee leadership for various journals. Monitor the pipeline of papers coming into peer review, making adjustments in journal workflows, publishing processes, and staff responsibilities as needed to adjust to shortfalls or excesses Track assigned publications metrics and ensure progress toward any established targets; share these metrics with internal staff and committee members as appropriate Clearly communicate expectations to staff and freelancers regarding work to be performed and deadlines Manage the book development process from inception through publication, emphasizing deadlines and timely publication, including: o Track status of books through the process, and provide regular updates to appropriate committees and Senior Manager Technical Publications o Work closely with authors and copy editors to assure deadlines are met o Review approved manuscripts for special copyediting or production problems; Advise on resolution of unique or unusual problems. o Monitor communication between author and copyeditor; when appropriate, keep author up to date on schedule, revisions and related matters. o Coordinate and participate a variety of editorial production activities such as reviewing dust jacket copy, digital delivery options offered and obtaining cataloging information from the Library of Congress; o Perform copy editing, proofreading and indexing reviews as necessary o Prepare and monitor budgets for assigned publications Job Description o Coordinate with Retail Sales Publishing Services and Marketing staff on publication schedules, pricing, digital delivery options and marketing plans for forthcoming books Works with SPE’s Marketing staff on product promotion and with the Sales staff on advertising sales for SPE’s journals and books Stay up to date on current technology trends in scholarly publishing Recommend opportunities to increase revenues, or reduce expenses where appropriate. Recommend process changes where appropriate Cooperate with other managers to leverage staff across all publications projects SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for the supervision of staff involved in peer review, copy editing, and serving as editorial assistants. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
