Adrienne Akins presented a paper, “‘A Great Man Among the Gringos’: Masculine Heroics and
Community Betrayal in George Washington Gómez,” at the 2006 meeting of the American
Studies Association of Texas Annual Conference on November 18, 2006.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Information has been received from The Center for Writers regarding its program. The Center
offers $15,000 Excellent Teaching Fellowships and $10,000 Teaching Assistantships, plus full
tuition and fee waivers. Recent graduates have won the Writing Award, the Henfield Award, the
Playboy Fiction Contest and the Flannery O’Connor Award. Nine recent graduates have
published books since 2003, and several more are publishing books this year. Apply online at

CONFERENCES – CALLS FOR PAPERS
Information has been received regarding the 2007 Summer Literary Seminars Fiction and Poetry
contest which is now accepting applications. The authors of the winning poetry and prose entries
will receive airfare, accommodations, and a full tuition waiver to the 2007 Summer Literary
Seminars program in St. Petersburg, Russia, and publication of the winning entry in The WalrusCanada’s leading glossy literary publication. The deadline for entries is February 28, 2007. For

Information has been received from the Southwestern Regional Conference on Christianity and
Literature regarding an upcoming conference titled “’Alarming Necessities’: Taste, Reading, and
Theology.” The conference takes place September 28-29, 2007 at the Arlington Hilton in
Arlington, Texas. Keynote speakers will be Dr. Stephen Prickett of Baylor University and Dr.
Frank Burch Brown of Christian Theological Seminary. Abstracts consisting of 250 words may
be sent by email attachment in MS Word or RTF format to Philip Mitchell (philipm@dbu.edu)

Information has been received from Eastern Washington University Press concerning its Blue
Lynx Prize for Poetry and the Spokane Prize for Short Fiction. For those who are interested, you
may send a book-length manuscript no less than 48 pages of poems for the Blue Lynx Prize, and
for the Spokane Prize, no less than 98 pages of short fiction. Please enclose a SASE for results
notification, and a $25 reading fee payable to EWU Press. Deadline for entry is May 15, 2007.

Information has been received from the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary regarding an
upcoming C.S. Lewis conference taking place October 26-27, 2007. The conference will be held
on the campus of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Keynote and plenary speakers
will be Walter Hooper, Literary Advisor for the C.S. Lewis Estate, Bruce Edwards, Bowling
Green State University, and James Como, York College. Papers are invited in the areas of Lewis
and Apologetics, Lewis and Literature, and Lewis and Culture. Proposals are encouraged from
Literature and Biblical scholars alike. 100-200 word abstracts of your proposed paper will be
