Description
Customer Requirements
As a first step in evaluating software systems, it is necessary to state the needs of the user areas and their
expectations for the performance of the software. Although IRT may not be in a position to evaluate whether or
not the proposed solution meets these needs, it is necessary to document expectations. With this in mind, please
provide responses to the following:
1. Project purpose – why is the application needed; what problem(s) will be solved, which other system(s)
will be replaced if this one is implemented?
2. Functional expectations including features/benefits that the solution is to provide:
a. Features/benefits required for the system to meet your goals
b. Features/benefits that would be advantageous but but are not critical for project success
c.
What functionality would be provided that we don’t currently have?
3. Performance expectations:
a. Hours of system availability, 5x8, 7x24, etc.
b. Response time expectation – what is an acceptable delay once a request is made of the system?
c.
If the system is down (not available for any reason) how will the department/function operate? (How
critical is this system?)
d. What is the volume of transactions the system must support?
e. What other systems need to interface with this new system, if any?
4. All new systems should use one of our directory services (AD or SunOne), for authentication. We need to
assure that all potential users have credentials in these systems.
a. Will any users require access to this system who do not currently have BUnetIDs
assigned?
5. Define the project scope (single or multi-phase implementation, pilot only, single department/division
implementation, campus-wide potential, etc.), timeframe, number of users involved, etc.
6. What is the anticipated IRT support? Specifically, list the functions for which IRT support will be needed,
e.g., server ordering and setup, application support, database support, end-user support, client software
installation.
