Strengths & Abilities All students have the ability to achieve all their goals in getting a good education and taking it with them throughout their careers, building and learning more everyday of their lives. The goals I have set out for my education is simple: to succeed in all areas of study. This means to get A’s in every class. This might seem simple to accomplish but in reality, it is not. I believe it is hard work; you have to be determined and dedicated to do all the required assignments in each class. This is my second year as a college student, and I have discovered many of my abilities as a thriving student as a minority in society. My strength as a student is my ability to take good notes that help me study for exams and answer questions in class. My favorite class would be all English classes. I love English. It seems to be one of the easiest classes for me. Since English is the only language I speak, I believe I should master all forms of it: grammar, literature, and writing. English literature gives me the chance to examine great author’s works, and write about it. I am able to write my opinions that compare the author’s works to similar ones. This gives me a voice to put my views forward. Even though I enjoy this class I am aware of the assignments assigned, and I complete them to my ability, however works that I have completed that I think are great do not always turn out that way. Papers that I have written are not good enough. This is the point where I go back and see the importance of writing drafts. Once I have written a few drafts, I can finally see my great paper taking form. I am able to use the skills learned in class to write a great paper in any class. This is the point that I realized I have completed my goals in that subjects. I have mastered it since I have taken what I learned and applied it to other areas of study. This is one of the tools needed to succeed in school, since all academic classes require you to write essays. Assignments of writing an essay is another way of reflecting on what you have learned about that topic. In my Puerto Rican Community class, my strength of writing essays has been helpful. In class, we have had assignments of writing drafts, which our peers reviewed. This gave me an opportunity to use what I learned in English composition to HUA194. In this class, I have gained something more than the ability to write, have taken the knowledge I knew about the culture and background of Puerto Ricans and expanded on it. I can look at a Puerto Rican community now and understand the roots that it came from. I now know who the Pioneers are that have fought for their communities and eventually achieved their goals. This course has helped me to achieve my goal because I believe I have mastered it. I understand all the information that was presented to me. I am able to take that information and apply it to my experiences of meeting people and understanding them based on their ethnic backgrounds that have helped form their distinct culture.
