November 10, 2005 Ms. Maria Molina Manhattan Psychiatric Center Wards Island New York, Ny 10035 Dear Ms. Molina, First and foremost, I would like to express my appreciation for having me at your facility in Manhattan Psychiatric Center (MPC) particularly in the Hispanic Ward. My clerkship experience in MPC was very valuable and worthwhile. Initially, I was a little bit anxious about being in a psychiatric setting. However, you and the staff were very supportive and welcoming, thus, giving me the courage and confidence to gain knowledge of the psychosocial component in Occupational Therapy. I was amazed at the wide array of programs offered at MPC. I am impressed particularly at the “Treatment Malls” where the environment was designed as a replica of the community setting. This is a brilliant idea for clients to acquire community living skills which incorporates the theories of Role Acquisition and Social Skills Training. During the course of my affiliation, I learn a great deal on how you use therapeutic use of self when dealing with psychiatric patients. I found out that being stern and too vigilant is not the best way to deal with clients, but rather to see past their impairments and treat them the way they should be treated, as normal human beings. All my false preconceive notions regarding clients with psychological problems has been changed and clarified. I had a wonderful time in MPC. Thank you for imparting your knowledge and expertise. I liked the fact that MPC has a calming and soothing atmosphere where clients as well as students learn in a healthy, positive and nurturing way. I am fortunate to do my clinical affiliation in MPC. You and the entire staff are such an inspiration to me. With Deep Gratitude and Revere, Rachel Bianca Mallari LaGuardia Commmunity College Occupational Therapy Assistant Student
