Parenting Course Information/ Syllabus

INTRODUCTION
Parenting is a one half-credit Family and Consumer Science course offered through the Career and
Technology Department for students in grades 10-12.
* The curriculum Teks are met through the book, “Parenting Rewards and
Responsibilities.”
By enrolling in Parenting, students will obtain a variety of applicable skills and take the responsibilities
of parenthood seriously. Society points to an ever-growing need for parenting education. During this
term, students will develop skills in the following applications and concepts:
TOPICS presented in chronological order
1.Self awareness /Attititudes about parenting
2. Power Point (Presentation)
On TEKS: Independent study
3. Why we study Parenting, how Parenting skills develop, and the philosophies, influences and roles of
Parenting
4. Factors for Parenting readiness: Financial, emotional, rights and responsibilities
5. Teen Pregnancy: Roots, effects, and options
6. Family Planning: Heredity, genetics, and understanding reproduction
7. Pregnancy: Signs, testing, development, prenatal care, stages, postnatal care
8. Newborn care: Birth location, selecting a pediatrician, feeding, infant necessities, and adjustments in
new roles
9. Infancy and toddler hood: Physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and moral development
10. The Growing Child: Health, nutrition, emotional needs, social skills, helping children learn, the
value of play, and children with special needs
SUPPLIES REQUIRED (due by the end of the first full week of class)
Each student will need to bring the following items:
 Paper and two writing utensils
 Pocket folder with fasteners
 Textbook (supplied to students)
 Markers
 Glue stick
Additional low-cost supplies for specialty projects as needed

Individual and Family Living Course Information/ Syllabus

INTRODUCTION
Individual and Family Living (IFL) is a one half-credit Family and Consumer Science course offered
through the Career and Technology Department for students in grades 9-12.
* The curriculum Teks are met through the book, “Contemporary Living.”
By enrolling in IFL, students will obtain a variety of applicable skills used in relationship building. The
number one request of corporations today is employees who exhibit strong communication skills and the
ability to work as a valuable team member. During this term, students will develop communication and
relationship skills in the following applications and concepts:
TOPICS presented in chronological order
1.Self awareness /Self-esteem
2. Power Point (Presentation)
On TEKS: Independent study
3. Personality & development: Chronological, physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and
philosophical growth
4. Heredity and genetics factors
5. Environmental influences including family, peers, education, occupation, religion, community, and
media
6. Responses to environment including the psychological defense theories of Erickson, Havinghurst,
Maslow, and Kohlberg, personal response patterns that include anger, fear, depression, attitudes,
prejudices, and stereotypes
7. Decisions: Strategies of good decision-makers for sound individual, career, and health practices
8. Avoiding harmful substances and lifestyle consequences
9. Healthy relationship patterns: Communication, dating, marriage, family life
