What did the people do? They returned to a rural agricultural lifestyle (farming) This rural lifestyle would mark a new era in western European history, and it would last from 500 to 1500 CE. What do we call this time period? The Middle Ages When did the Early Middle Ages take place 500-1000 CE Looking at the Latin words medius (middle) and aevum (age), what is another way of referring to the Middle Ages? Medieval Europe Because the religion was an important part of everybody’s lives during the Middle Ages. This time period has also been know as this. Missionaries carried Christianity and this alphabet to Germanic tribes throughout western Europe. Latin With the collapse of Rome (476 CE), the Germanic tribes each began to carve out their own territories. Muslims What was the name used for the Muslims in control of Spain? Moors What is the religion of the Muslims? Islam In 732 CE, the Umayyad Dynasty was preparing to move into the Frankish kingdom. Who was the Frankish leader who went out to stop them? Charles Martel What was Charles Martel’s nickname? The Hammer What was the name of the battle between the Umayyads and the Franks? The Battle of Tours Who won the battle? Charles “the Hammer” Martel and the Franks What was the significance of the battle? If the Franks would have lost, Europe may have become part of the Muslim empire. This French king was a skilled warrior. He went on to conquer much of western Europe. As he defeated the other tribes, he had them converted to Christianity. Charlemagne Because Charlemagne expanded the realm of the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Leo III crowned him and gave him this title- Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne ruled over most of Europe by 800 CE. He built these to unite his empire. Churches, roads, and schools In the 800s, these people invaded Europe by sea from Scandanavia. Vikings The Vikings were very brutal. Another group attacked Germany and Italy from the east. Who were they? The Magyars What type of people were the Magyars? Hungarian nomads Because of all of these attacks by Vikings and Magyars, people wanted protection. Because of the need for protection, Western Europe developed this system. The Feudal System Can you name the different groups in this pyramid?
