The Indian Subcontinent: Land and Peoples the subcontinentof India is in South Asia. It is called a subcontinent because of its huge size and because its topographical features set it off from the rest of Asia. The sub continent is divided among three nations: India, Pakistan, and bangladesh.
The Land
The subcontinent of Idnia is shaped like a huge triangle. THE broad northern top of the triangle is separated from much of the rest of Asia by the towering, snow-covered
Himalayas, the biggest mountains in the world. Himalaya means “home of snow.” The point of the triangle juts into the Indian Ocean on the south. In the north, its nieghbors are the People’s Republic of China; Tibet, which is controlled by China; and the two small countries of Nepal, and Bhutan.
The area of the Indian subcontinent is about 1,633,000 square miles (4,230,000 square km), or less than half the size of the united States. There are about 1.1 billion people in the subcontinent, more than four times the number in the United States. India accounts form more than three-fourths of the subcontinent in both area and and a population, which about 1,270,000 square miles (3,290,000 square km) and a population of about 844 million.
