World History to 1500 CE/Geography Syllabus 2015-2016 Ms. Marnell and Ms. Banks Purpose The purpose of this class is to help you understand early man and early civilizations of the world until 1500 CE. You will also learn geography of the world and understand its importance in the development of early civilizations. The following schedule should provide topics and a general time frame in which material will be covered. First Quarter 8/31-10/30/15 Early Humans River Valley Civilizations Hebrews, Persia, Judaism India Second Quarter 11/4-1/28/16 China Greece Rome Third Quarter 2/1 – 4/14/16 Byzantine Empire and Russia Islam Africa and the Americas Fourth Quarter 4/18-6/14/16 Middle Ages Renaissance Geography, Latin America * Academic expectations 1) Attend all classes on a daily basis, recognizing that learning and attendance are strongly related. 2) Be prepared for class with notebook, agenda, textbook and pencil every day. 3) Maintain an organized notebook for each class. 4) Accept the responsibility for your own education and act as your own advocate. 5) Maintain personal and academic integrity. Using and passing off another’s work as yours is plagiarism and results in an automatic zero. Allowing others to copy your work is also cheating and results in a zero and parental contact. This includes homework. 1 Make-up work policy: If you were absent, your homework is due upon your return. You also need to make up missed assignments at the earliest possible opportunity. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to check the folder for missed assignments. If you miss a test or quiz, it must be made up within one week of your return. NO LATE HOMEWORK: Completed homework must be turned in on assigned date. If you were not absent and didn’t turn in your homework, you may not make it up. Citizenship expectations 1. Arrive on time and be in your seat preparing to work when the bell rings. 2. Stay on task and do not disrupt the learning environment. 3. Do not talk during class. You will miss important information and cause others to miss important information. 4. Behave like an adult. You are in high school and you will be expected to maintain polite and appropriate behavior at all times. 5. Remember that the teacher dismisses the class, not the bell 6. Be respectful and courteous to all people in the school building. Grades Tests, Projects/Essays Quizzes Homework/participation 40% 15%* (projects are weighted as a quiz grade plus 20% a project grade for a total of 35%. 25% *Project/Essay grades will appear in the gradebook twice, as a quiz grade and project essay grade, to reflect the full weight of 35%. Graded work Tests, quizzes and assignments will be graded and returned as quickly as possible, which is usually about one week. Please keep in mind that projects and essays take longer to grade. Expect to receive graded research papers, projects and essays between two and three weeks after they are due. Materials 3-ring binder (1 ½- 2” or larger) with pockets and, tabs, and notebook paper. Computers are available in the library before and after school, in an open computer lab before school, and during Titan Time. Students will be expected to use the Vision website to complete homework and study, however, limited paper copies of the material will be available for students without home Internet access. Power points and homework assignments will be posted online on the Vision website at www.loudounvision.net.
