Still Life Vocabulary
Diagonal Line- Stretching an object or image across a page. Appeals to the eye.
S- Curve- When objects appear to be moving in an “S” shaped way across a page.
Repetition- The use of an image or drawing over and over again to create a pattern.
Overlapping- When one object passes in front of another object to create layering.
Shape- Two Dimensional Forms that use Geometric or Organic Shapes.
Positive Space- Objects that are the main focus or subject of an image. The images in front.
Negative Space- Objects that are not the main focus of an image. The image or design in
the back.
Texture- The feel, appearance, thickness, or stickiness of a surface. (Ex: Smooth, Furry,
Silky)
Contrast- The opposite of different elements of design. (Ex: Rough and Smooth, Dark and
Light)
Movement- The arrangement of objects, images, or colors placed in a way to create
motion.
Grid System- The use of a measured grid to help design a drawing or a painting to scale.
Point of View- The way the viewer sees an image. It can be above, below, or at eye-level.
Composition- The way a picture is arranged on a surface.
Proportion/Scale- The relative size of a work of art.
Value- Using a scale of going from light to dark, or dark to light in an image.
