What Parents Can Do to Help Their Children Cope with Grief and Loss

Focus on your children and watch for any unusual behavior or physical symptoms.

 Make time to talk to them and monitor how they are feeling.

Limit the amount of information you provide, stick to the main facts.

 Be accepting and encourage their expression of feelings.

Be a good listener.

Reassure them of your love and their safety at home/school.

Maintain a general daily routine, but be flexible.

Spend extra time with your children, such as reading, playing and talking.

Stay physically close and available for your children.

Make sure they get the appropriate amount of sleep, exercise and nutrition.

Provide a positive outlet of expression, such as playing, drawing, writing, and discussion.

 Supervise the amount of television exposure and computer use.
