Today, I will analyze a primary document. Also, I
will understand why the colonization of Plymouth
almost failed and how the Natives helped those
colonists.




Tobacco exports take off  30,000 lbs a year in
1620.
Importation of slaves begins in 1619 and increases
as tobacco exports rise.
Representative government: House of Burgesses =
male settlers select representatives and those
representatives make laws for everyone.
Early Virginians had greater freedoms than those
living in England. That begins to change in the
1670s. Only white, male, landowners could vote.

Why did the Pilgrims come to America?


To set up a community where they could practice
their religion freely. They wanted to be separate
from the Church of England and took the concept of
separate church and state literally (this wasn’t well
received in England)
How did their goals differ from those that
founded Jamestown?


Jamestown founded for wealth (joint-stock
company)
Plymouth founded for religious freedom.
