Chapter 2. The Beginnings of English America, 1607-­‐1660: Jamestown. In this chapter we will explore the motives behind English colonization of the Virginia Colony, then consider who was emigrating to Jamestown and for what reasons. Contact with the Indians and the subsequent transformation of Indian life is examined. We will look at tobacco production as the economic engine of the settlement, and its cultivation largely by indentured servants.
