Do Now: Map of the 1800 Election.
Today, I will be able to explain the results of the 1800
Presidential election and the constitutional problems
that followed. I will be able to identify Thomas
Jefferson’s political beliefs before becoming
president.


After the passage of the Alien and Sedition
Acts Jefferson leaves Washington.
Jefferson (the VP) argued that it was the right
of the states to nullify or cancel federal laws
that they didn’t agree with (D-R, belief)


He and Madison help KY and VA file the Kentucky
and Virginia resolution.
Stated that each state could determine whether a law
was constitutional (this could be argued since
Judicial Review doesn’t exist yet)



Adams supporters said, Mr. Jefferson "hated the
Constitution," he had hated it from the beginning
and "pledged to subvert it."
They also said, he (Jefferson) would "tumble the
financial system of the country into ruin at one
stroke"; which would of necessity stop all
payments of interest on the public debt, and bring
on "universal bankruptcy and beggary."
Jefferson's camp accused President Adams of
having a "hideous hermaphroditical character,
which has neither the force and firmness of a man,
nor the gentleness and sensibility of a woman."

Two main issues:





Taxes were raised in 1798 to pay for the navy against French
aggression.
Alien and Sedition Acts were considered to be unpopular and against
the spirit of the Am.Rev.
Hamilton (from NY) wrote a pamphlet highly critical of
Adams’ presidency, calling him a “tyrant” and a “fool.” This
was meant for private circulation.
Burr (from NY) received a copy of the pamphlet and
circulated it to the press, thus hurting Adams’ chances of
winning the election and embarrassing Hamilton.
Jefferson and Burr tied (73 votes), the House was able to
select the winner. Hamilton lobbied for Jefferson.







People should have political power
Strong state government (KY and VA Resolution)
Emphasis on agrarian based economy
Strict interpretation of the Constitution.
Main foreign ally should be France
Opposed national bank (unconstitutional, 10th
Amendment).
Opposed protective tariffs (hurt southerners and
farmers, artificially drove up the cost of goods).
