JOB OPENING AT YAKIMA HEALTH DISTRICT ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST Posting Date: March 20, 2015 POSITION TITLE: Environmental Health Specialist FLSA Status – Non-Exempt Union: Local 17, AFL-CIO CLOSING DATE: APRIL 10, 2015 REPORT TO: Environmental Health Director POSITION STATUS: Full-time 40-hr week Salary Range: $3,760 to $6,011 per month plus benefits Definition: The Environmental Health Specialist is responsible for conducting routine and complaint based inspections in the food, water recreation, solid waste, drinking water, and onsite sewage programs; investigating foodborne, waterborne, and vector-borne illnesses; reviewing plans for solid waste facilities, schools, food service establishments, drinking water systems, and onsite sewage systems; and performing site hazardous assessments ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Performs inspections and investigations per regulation, policy, and best professional judgment; Provides excellent customer service to Health District clients; Adheres to all code and policy requirements; Assures timeliness and completeness of assignments; Attends necessary meetings and trainings; Functions well in a team environment and able to work independently with times of minimal supervision; Teachable and open to new ideas; Committed to preventing disease and protecting the public’s health; As assigned, represents the District in local, regional, and State forums and workgroups. EH specialist March 2015 Page 1 of 3 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: principles of environmental health; relevant environmental health regulations and ordinances; and foodborne, waterborne, and vector-borne disease prevention and control. Ability to: problem solve; exercise best professional judgment; perform competent field work; provide appropriate customer service; effectively communicate with colleagues and stakeholders; support a cohesive team environment; work independently; operate computers and other technology; perform other duties as assigned; and represent the Health District on local, regional, and state levels. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors of Science Degree in environmental health, biology, chemistry, geology, or similar physical science (copy of transcript must be submitted). Bilingual language skills in English and Spanish desirable. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid Washington State driver’s license and auto insurance. Prove or obtain immunity to Measles and Rubella diseases within thirty (30) days of employment Provide documentation of the results of a Tuberculosis skin test administered within the previous ninety (90) days or be tested. Become a member of the local collective bargaining unit. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position is non-exempt. The work week is normally 5 days per week but may be adjusted based on District needs. The position should expect to work occasional weekends; Work is performed in an office setting and in the field; and Physical requirements of job include speaking, hearing, seeing, sitting, walking, stooping, standing, lifting up to 50 pounds, writing, and driving; use of hands and fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, and equipment; reach with hands and arms.
