Monday, February 2nd, 2016 English 11A TODAY’S OBJECTIVES: Students will examine how the author’s purpose affects his/her use of language and choice of form AGENDA: 1. Discuss/take notes on characterization of Nick, Tom, Jordan & Daisy (including her comment about wanting her daughter to be a “beautiful little fool”), as well as any symbolism, from Chapter 1. 2. In groups, review both the SOAPSTone strategy using the poem Woman Work as well as poetic devices using the poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud (see webpage). 3. With clock buddy, analyze beginning of chapter 2 from The Great Gatsby: determine the symbolism and tone in this passage(see webpage). What is Fitzgerald’s point about society’s conscience during this time period? HOMEWORK/UPCOMING DUE DATES: First Gatsby reading quiz will be this Tuesday, 2/2. Next Thursday, 2/4, you are required to turn in ten vocabulary words (handout – see webpage) from Gatsby.
