CLASS RATIONALE The Art program is designed to develop the creative process and offers students opportunities to experience the different processes of creating art. In addition to gaining confidence and proficiency while working with a variety of media, students will learn about the history, creation, analysis, and interpretation of art. Students will create visually striking works of art with an emphasis on the use of design elements and principles. OBJECTIVES Art is both a body of knowledge and a series of activities. By the end of the trimester, students will be able to… understand and apply media, techniques, and processes. evaluate the characteristics and merits of student work and peer work. understand the visual arts in relation to history and culture. DAILY PROCEDURES Each day, students will begin class with an Art Start activity, which will be part of a project’s introduction or ongoing skill set. Projects will be introduced, explained, and demonstrated in parts by the teacher. Students will work through the various stages to complete projects and other assignments. Necessary materials will be provided. At the end of class, it is the responsibility of the class as a whole to clean up all areas in a timely manner. EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS Class guidelines for success in Art: Be to class on time. Every class period is important! Listen to and follow ALL directions. Ask appropriate questions. Use all tools safely and properly. Use time wisely; stay on task and work towards daily objectives. Work quietly; use appropriate language and have appropriate conversations. Be responsible for work area and supplies; clean up after yourself. Have a positive attitude-- you CAN do it! EXPECTATIONS OF TEACHER Learning will take place under the guidance of teacher’s instruction, demonstration, experience, and expertise within the classroom. Projects will be assessed and returned by the end of the trimester. Some projects may be put on display. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Art is a studio course; therefore work is produced in class and will be completed during the allotted class time. Students should be in class every day. When students miss class, they will have to make up work without the benefit of important demonstrations by the teacher. Homework is not usually assigned, but students may need to work on projects before or after school if work is not completed during class. Due to the nature of art class, each student is assessed according to the state standard(s) that is/are the focus of each project. MATERIALS All necessary materials will be supplied.
