JOB OBJECTIVE
Assists in performing entry level inspection and analytical work in responding to
complaints and/or requests for services from the general public; or assists in performing
entry level work investigating non-compliance issues in support of a regulatory program
for the Metropolitan Government. Performs related work as required.
JOB DESCRIPTION
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Investigates complaints, request for services and/or instances of non-compliance.
Gathers data and facts through on-site investigations.
May review documents, both current and historical.
Interviews pertinent individuals to gather specific facts.
May hear and investigate complaints.
May issue citations to violators.
May initiate work orders.
Assists with resolving complaints from consumers or noncompliance instances.
May investigate complaints.
May issue citations to violators.
Decides best course of action to resolve complaint or noncompliance.
May initiate work order.
Refers unusual or difficult cases to supervisor or appropriate division for direction.
May conduct follow-up investigation to ensure issue is resolved.
Performs administrative activities.
Answers elementary questions about program and guidelines.
Interprets policies, rules and regulations as required.
Writes detailed reports of investigations.
Maintains records and preserves reports.
Prepares concise reports on programs or projects.
Keeps abreast of any changes or modifications in services, delivery procedures, and/or
regulatory rules and policies.
May attend various meetings and training sessions.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED/SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This is a non-supervisory classification.
This classification receives general supervision and reports to a management level
supervisor, who is consulted on unusual or complex matters.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work environment involves both office and field duties. Office duties involve the
everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such
places as offices, meeting and training rooms, etc. The work area is adequately lighted,
heated, and ventilated. In the field, employees are subject to loud noise, heavy
machinery, traffic, etc.
This classification works both in an office setting under generally favorable working
conditions and in the field. There may be extended periods of walking; standing;
bending; carrying of light items, etc.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma and two (2) years of responsible inspection, investigative, or
compliance experience in support of a regulatory program or service.
OR
Two (2) years of college.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Knowledge of the basic policies, patterns, and practices as they relate to the compliance
or inspection program.
Knowledge of departmental rules, policies, and internal procedures.
Skill in fact-finding, analysis, and problem solving.
Ability to investigate complaints in a professional and efficient manner.
Ability to accurately compile and analyze data.
Ability to accurately maintain records, files and reports.
Ability to perform standardized processing procedures, if necessary.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to plan, organize, and maintain an even work flow.
Ability to take initiative and use independent judgment.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

GRADE LEVEL CRITERIA/ILLUSTRATIONS
The following examples illustrate some of the many combinations of situations,
factors, and responsibilities in a SR-7 Compliance Officer 1 position:
Performs, under general supervision, difficult and responsible work.
Guidelines for work are numerous and varied, making it difficult for the employee to
choose the most appropriate instruction at times.
Incumbents may review the work of others and give advice concerning procedural
requirements. The degree to which this is done well affects the reliability and
effectiveness of the department as a whole.
Personal contacts are with employees within the department, in other departments, or
with management or users or providers of department services. The employee provides
information, explains the application of regulations, or resolves problems relating to the
assignment, and decides how the various transactions are to be completed.
LICENSES REQUIRED
Valid "Class D" Driver's License may be required for some positions in this classification.
