To understand why ‘Taking Action on Climate Change’ is important. This would
include all of the related environmental, social and economic impacts of
increasing levels of GHG (greenhouse gases) in our atmosphere.
To identify ways in which the Environmental Services department of the City of
Lethbridge can encourage, support and educate individual citizens to Take Action
on Climate Change.
To identify ways in which the Environmental Services department of the City of
Lethbridge can facilitate initiatives to encourage people to work together to Take
Action on Climate Change at a neighbourhood level.
To identify ways in which the Environmental Services department of the City of
Lethbridge can encourage, support and coordinate programs by the City of
Lethbridge to Take Action on Climate Change.
To identify ways in which the Environmental Services department of the City of
Lethbridge can work together with the County of Lethbridge and other
neighboring partners to develop regional programs to Take Action on Climate
Change.
To produce a report that communicates an appreciation for the need for Action on
Climate Change with innovative, well thought out, feasible program suggestions.
To practice oral presentation skills.
To work collaboratively in a group.
Presentation Dates:
Dec 4th & Dec 6th
Time Allowance: ~15 min
1. Each group of 5 students will choose a ‘level of action’ from those listed above
such that each of the four levels is represented by two groups. Choices will be
first come – first served accompanied by a list of the five students in the group.
Choices will not be allocated to incomplete groups.
2. Start your report with a section detailing why Taking Action on Climate Change
is important. Strive to connect to issues specific to this region, as well as general
issues. This section need not be part of your presentation.
3. The next section of the report (and this should be in your report) contains your
thinking about how your ‘level’ differs from the others. Are there different
stakeholders to consider / involve? Are there partners (people or organizations)
that might be helpful? Who? Why? How does your level influence the potential
scope of your suggested programs? How will your level influence the ability of
the Environmental Services department to implement your suggested programs?
4. Ensure that you are clear what initiatives the Environmental Services department
of the City of Lethbridge is already undertaking with respect to climate change.
Don’t suggest something already essentially in place unless you have major
suggestions for improvement, in which case: go for it! I will obtain the
PowerPoint that Dr. Dakin used in class and post on the class website. Contact her
for further insight at sdakin@lethbridge.ca
5. As noted above, Dr. Dakin, Kelly and I hope that you can come up with some
innovative, well thought out, feasible program suggestions. In fact, they have
suggested that the best suggestion will be given serious consideration for
implementation by the department.
6. Present two copies of a 15-20 page report to me (one of which I will pass on to
Dr. Dakin) that includes three sections: 1) Why Taking Action on Climate Change
is important, 2) How the level at which you are addressing possible solutions to
the problem (individual, neighbourhood, city, region) affected your thinking and
3) A limited but detailed (actionable) set of suggested programs or program
elements that the Environmental Services department could facilitate / implement
in order to help us to Take Action on Climate Change.
7. Your presentation should serve to illustrate the points above with an emphasis on
sections two and three.
8. Presentations will be made in ‘ascending’ order by pairs, i.e. the two groups
proposing programs at the individual level will go first on Dec. 4th followed by
the two groups working on neighbourhood solutions. On Dec 6th, we will begin
with the two groups at the city level and finish with the regional proposals.
9. The report is due on the day of your presentation.
