First Year Only Course Offerings - Fall 2016 First Year Only Courses (FYOs) are courses reserved just for first year students. In addition, instructors will incorporate information about campus resources that will better assist you with your transition to the university. Check out the list below to find the course that best suits your interests and needs. Advisors: FYOs from this list are best suited for students that have not been identified for Honors, Bridge, Blugold Beginnings, or the FY Red, Yellow, or Gray student group. However, if students in these specific groups reject their recommended course, they are allowed to enroll in one of these as an alternative. Though there is nothing stopping a student from enrolling in more than one of these courses, advisors should ensure that students are enrolled in only one FYO, GEN, IDIS 187 integrated course, or bundle to ensure that there are enough seats for all incoming students. All students enrolled in a section of IDIS 187 will concurrently enroll in a “content area” class taught by the same instructor. It is an “integrative” seminar because it asks students to connect their experiences outside of the classroom to their learning in it, and to connect the different kinds of learning they will be doing in the first semester (and, we hope, throughout their time in Eau Claire). This will be a safe, collaborative environment to apply new skills and build community as students transition into their first semester in college. These bundled courses also fulfill the Integrated Learning Outcome from the new Liberal Education in addition to the other outcomes met by the content course. Advisors: These IDIS 187 bundled courses are best suited for students in the FY Yellow student group. This same student group will also be suited for GEN 110. The advisor, in consultation with the student should determine which is the best option for the student. Avoid enrolling in both. In addition, students not flagged for the FY Yellow group, that express some concern on their abilities to succeed to transition to university life, may be interested in enrolling in one of these courses. The best way to sell this course is to indicate that it fulfills the Integrated Learning outcome and the IDIS portion of the course only meets once per week. GEOG 111.201/IDIS 187.205 is reserved for students in the FY Gray student group.
