December 6, 2010 PASSED BY VOICE VOTE 29-0-0 54-R-14 UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-EAU CLAIRE STUDENT SENATE RESOLUTION IN RECOGNITION OF MIDDLE EAST AWARENESS WEEK 1 2 3 4 5 WHEREAS, the current population of Middle Eastern students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is 15 students; and WHEREAS, there were no students from the Middle East in 2009; and WHEREAS, enhanced recruitment efforts by the Center for 6 International Education has seen students come in from Saudi 7 Arabia, Yemen, United Arab Emirates and Jordan among others; and 8 WHEREAS, these recruitments go in line with the University 9 of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s strategic plan to promote connected 10 learning in recruiting and retaining diverse students, faculty 11 and staff; and 12 WHEREAS, these recruitments also support the university’s 13 strategic goal of accelerating global learning that explicitly 14 calls for an expansion of international student enrollment; and 15 WHEREAS, UW-Eau the CIE Claire to Chancellor 16 challenged double 17 international students by 2014; and the Brian Levin-Stankevich university’s number of 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 WHEREAS, currently the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire supports Black History Month; and WHEREAS, currently the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire supports Hispanic Heritage Month; and WHEREAS, currently the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire supports American Indian Heritage Month; and WHEREAS, currently the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire supports Asian American History Month; and WHEREAS, currently the above stated cultural months are celebrated on the University of Wisconsin campus; and WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago designates November as Arab Heritage Month; and WHEREAS, New York University holds Middle Eastern and a Muslim cultural themed week every March; and WHEREAS, currently the City of San Francisco designates October as Arab Heritage Month; and WHEREAS, the Middle East is highly publicized and commonly misunderstood among the public and in media; and WHEREAS, recent events in the community allegedly targeting Muslims have been reported; and WHEREAS, this has lead to the formation Against Hate and Discrimination Group; and of a Students WHEREAS, 40 in response to the alleged hate speech, the 41 International Students Association initiated and organized the 42 recent Middle East Awareness Week; and 43 WHEREAS, the increased population of Middle East students 44 prompted the formation of Middle East Awareness Week as well; 45 and WHEREAS, the Middle East Awareness Week was initiated in 46 47 support of the 48 promoting a safe and inclusive environment for all students, 49 faculty and staff; and 51 Week 52 dialogue; and 54 55 Inclusive served as a crucial venue to WHEREAS, recent Middle engage WHEREAS, Wisconsin-Eau East attendance throughout its events; and 61 of the 57 60 in in intercultural- that promote multiculturalism; and University 59 goals WHEREAS, the Middle East Awareness Week showcases events 56 58 Excellence WHEREAS, in addition to that, the Middle East Awareness 50 53 University’s the recent Claire Middle Awareness saw East around Week 250 Awareness held at people in Week was Week was supported by the Office of Multicultural Affairs; and WHEREAS, the recent Middle East Awareness supported by the Division of Student Affairs; and 62 63 64 WHEREAS, the recent Middle East Awareness Week was East Awareness Week was supported by Blugold Dining; and WHEREAS, recent supported 66 Political Science, and Philosophy and Religious Studies; and WHEREAS, the Middle 65 67 by the a Departments Middle students, of East faculty Education Heritage and Studies, Week community will 68 educating members 69 religion, culture, and politics of the Middle East; History, focus about on the 70 BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the UW-Eau Claire Student 71 Senate supports and acknowledges a Middle East Heritage Week on 72 this campus; and 73 74 75 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Middle East Heritage Week take place in mid-November; and BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that upon passage President Jambrek 76 transmit copies of this 77 Stankevich, 78 Chancellor; Dr. Beth Hellwig, Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs; 79 Dr. Brian Carlisle, Dean of Students; Dr. Susan Harrison, Chair, 80 University 81 International 82 Multicultural Affairs.
