Purpose
Purpose:
To manage a panel of patients with mental health disorders, to include diagnosis, and treatment with
medication and other therapies. To serve as a mental health resource for intra-office and intradepartmental consultation and some staff training.
Essential Functions
Function 1:
Perform mental health intake examinations and diagnose mental health disorders. Prescribe
psychotropic medication and other treatment. Develop a follow-up plan and maintain continuity of
care.

Function 2:
Serve as a resource to Counseling Services and medical providers through consultation or formal
training. Work in close collaboration with on-site psychiatrist, psychiatric resident and psychologists.

Function 3:
Participate in preceptorship of professional (nurse practitioner) students.
5 % Time
Function 4:
Maintain mental health department according to Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care
(AAAHC) standards. Actively participate in the performance improvement process.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in nursing (MSN, MS) with current Texas registered nurse license. 2 years of
experience as a Nurse Practitioner. National certification as a psychiatric-mental health NP, and
recognition as an advanced practice nurse by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners (BNE). Current
prescriptive authorization from BNE including prescribing controlled substances III-V. Must have DEA
number or obtain one within first month of employment. Current basic life support certification.
Proficient in the use of all medical equipment in the area of specialization. Applicants must include in

Preferred Qualifications:
1 year experience in a similar position including the following: Excellent working knowledge of
behavioral medicines and treatments for mental health conditions; accurate understanding of
psychiatric diagnoses and their medical and behavioral management; ability to make quick and
accurate assessments of mental and behavioral conditions and develop appropriate management and
treatment plans; ability to exercise balanced judgment in evaluating situations, making decisions, and
responding to difficult or confrontational situations
