Nurse Practitioner (0701)

FUNCTION: Provides primary health care services for a caseload of patients in an area of
clinical specialization in collaboration with physicians, nurse practitioners, clinical
psychologists, and other members of the health care team.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Function 1 Secures and evaluates medical, developmental, and psychiatric-mental health
histories of the patients.

Function 2 Performs physical examinations using various techniques and discriminates
between normal and abnormal findings obtained by history, physical, screening, and
behavioral assessments.

Function 3 Makes diagnoses and implements appropriate evidence-based management
plans focused on treatment of illness, prevention of illness, and promotion of health.

Function 4 Provides follow-up and maintenance care to patients within their scope of
practice and realm of established protocols.

Function 5 Gathers data on patient problems, patient compliance with regimes, followup care, and patient health status to evaluate practice outcomes.

INTERNAL CONTROL: Responsible for the design, execution, and effectiveness of a system
of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that department operations are effective
and efficient, department assets are safeguarded, department financial information is reliable, and
the department complies with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed under usual clinic conditions and requires a high degree of contact
with patients, other clinic personnel, and the campus community.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree in Nursing (MSN, MS). Current Texas registered nurse license. National
certification as an Adult, Family, or Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and recognition
as an advanced practice nurse by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners (BNE). Current
prescriptive authorization from BNE. Prescribing controlled substances III-V and DEA
number must be obtained within 30 days of hire. 2 years of experience as a Professional
Nurse Practitioner.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Current Basic Life Support Certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Proficient in
the use of all medical and surgical instruments and equipment in their area of
specialization. Use of a personal computer and standard office equipment. Proficient in
all phases of work. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Specific job requirements or physical location of position allocated to this classification render
the position security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code
§51.215.
