Studio, Media Arts and Art History Graduate Studies General Rules of Lab Conduct, Maintenance and Safety - No open toed shoes - Long hair must be pulled back when using power tools/equipment - No dangling jewelry - Must wear safety glasses with all tool use - Dust mask when appropriate - Use appropriate protective clothing - Assist others when they cannot safely handle materials and equipment alone - NO CHILDREN ! - Doors must remain closed -- no propping open at any time - CLEAN ALL messes made on and around work tables and equipment - If playing music while working, keep volume down to reasonable level, preferably, use earphones instead. - Works in progress must be cleared from classroom tables before leaving. - NO ALCOHOL OR DRUGS - Working with potentially dangerous equipment while under the influence is a sure ticket to disaster. EMERGENCY – POLICE ext. 23003 – HAZARDOUS MATERIAL SPILL ext. 22185 Additional Rules for the Sculpture Studio - NO STUDENTS (unless designated by instructor) ALLOWED IN TOOL ROOM - Make sure dust collector, fans lights, etc. are off before leaving. - ALL plaster stays AWAY from sinks. Washout barrels must be used. - Plaster (dry or wet) must be kept out of the floor drains - All plaster must be scraped and cleaned from work tables and/or floor before leaving. - Table saw table can not be used as a work area - Table saw table and radial arm saw tables must be clear of lumber, scraps and tools while cutting - Put away all tools before leaving the room - If machine set-ups are changed for special cuts, return to normal settings when finished. - Dust collector must be turned on when using power equipment (dampers closed on all machines not in use) - Do not leave paint booth exhaust running more than 30 minutes - Protect the table tops from being scarred / altered during work activity, including paints, glues, plaster etc. - Reclaimed wood must be cleaned of all nails / hardware before bringing into studio - Check new wood for the bar code that is usually stapled in the end of the lumber, remove all staples before cutting Additional Rules for Metals Studio (Metal forming machines, not including welding) - Be cautious of hand placement when working with any metal forming equipment (rollers, brakes and shears) - Do not leave any set up materials or jigs on the milling table - Briefly “test start” all rotating machinery (mill, lathe, etc.) to ensure that nothing restricts movement before turning and leaving on. - Clear all table services after use - Return all set up materials to rack when finished - Do not have any liquids near the electrical machinery so as to avoid shock as well as rust damage to bare metal surfaces - Clean up all “turnings” from floor and machinery when done
