The Problem

Every single day students litter all across the campus at Georgia Gwinnett College. Aside from the fact that litter makes the school visually unattractive, it could lower the property value of the campus as much as 15%! Litter build up becomes a breeding ground for insects and rodents, destroys habitats, and damages the Earth's "green" factor. If something is not done about the amount of litter on campus, the school will be an unhealthy environment and the number of students will decrease .

The problem is that people don't believe that their little piece of litter makes any difference. Just one cigarette butt can leak out toxins that are harmful to animals and could potentially lead to the death of those animals. If people would believe that their little piece of litter made a difference in the scheme of things, then our campus would not only be more welcoming, but also could prevent the death of many fluffy little animals. The only way for us to see a decrease in the amount litter is to get people physically involved. In other words, individuals must be aware, understand, and believe that litter is truly a problem before they are willing to act.

The Solution

There are several steps the litter campaign can take in order to help the students and faculty of Georgia

Gwinnett understand the problems involved with littering. For example, one weekend the clubs at GGC could collect all the trash around campus and put them in one pile near the entrance of the campus. They could leave the trash near the entrance until Monday, so when the students and faculty drive in they will see and understand the amount of litter polluting our campus. In addition, we can create colorful and quick to the point posters that provide facts about the costs of littering, the harmful effects to the environment, and the damage litter can cause on people's attitudes of an area. The posters can be hung up throughout the campus in all of the buildings, and people can read them to understand the problems of littering. As a result, by showing people that their little piece of litter makes a difference in the grand scheme of things, we can also make them believe that they can make a difference and that their little bit hurts. The campaign must be exciting, attractive, and memorable. To reach the students, we can hold contests, events, and goals. Making the litter campaign into a competition with a reward at the end will persuade students to pitch in.

The Pitch

The only way to make a difference in the litter problem is to get students involved. It is important to engage individuals to take greater responsibility for improving the litter problem.

Our campaign will target eighteen to twenty-four -year-olds. In order to communicate to the students of Georgia Gwinnett College, we will use multimedia, slogans, and images. Our slogan will be “Every Litter Bit Hurts”, “Every Little Bit Helps”. The image will reflect the harmful effects of littering, which will be posted on many multimedia screens in various lobbies. In order to make people aware of the problem and want to act, a large percentage sign will be put in the front of the school. The sign will indicate the amount of litter found on the campus throughout the week in pounds. Also, many contests will take place to involve the students. One contest includes filling clear bins with the litter found on campus. Whoever first fills the greatest number of bins after two weeks, is the winner. Another contest involves students making the best lyrical or video campaign concerning litter. More attractive trashcans also need to be placed in main entrances and the places where most students congregate at Georgia Gwinnett College. A refill charge on beverages at GGC is another way to get students to act. Instead of throwing a perfectly fine cup away and replacing the cup for an additional cup, a small refill charge could be placed in the food courts. The multiple ideas will work for many reasons. These reasons include:

 A student will realize the difference his or her actions can make

 Students will become more aware

 There will be constant visual reminders

 The contests will be fun and competitive

 Students will be pressured by other students to get involved

Putting the ideas in practice will create positive results. Encouraging students not to litter and educating them on the harmful effects creates a healthier environment, economy, and social life.

When students begin to realize the gravity of littering, the students of Georgia Gwinnett College will become more responsisble for their actions.

Activities & Participant Responsibilities

Step 1. We are starting a Litter campaign for our college

Step 2. We have the attention of the Vice President now we must use media, internet, text, and voice to capture the attention of the 18-25 age group.

Step 3. The GGC staff will add support as well as the janitors.

Step 4. The janitors will be asked to stop cleaning the trash to see the effects of littering.

 Step 5. A math class will be helping us to create graphs and models to show results.

Step 6. We will be posting these graphs and models on the internet and over the school.

Step 7. Not only will a math class be helping but also, a Digital Media class will be

 providing us with online sources and visual representations of our campaign.

Step 8. Our slogan, "every litter bit hurts, every little bit helps" along with designs for an

 emotional appeal to our campaign.

Step 9. Banners showing others of people stepping on gum and catching fields on fire to make the visual appeal even greater than just simple text of "Don't Litter!".

 Step 10. In order for our campaign to stick in the minds of everybody, we will obtain new trash cans more visible recycling bins and have rallies and fundraisers with prizes.

 Step 11. Hopefully with all these efforts we will be able to capture and hold the students of GGC.

Step 12. Essentially we are trying to scare GGC students of a growing problem not only here but everywhere around the state.

Step 13. When all these steps have been implemented the positive results should be drastic.

 Step 14. Money that was once used by the school for picking up trash and litter, will now be used for more understandable means.

 Step 15. Our method will encourage high school students to see our campus as a college that cares for the environment.

 Step 16. Most importantly Gwinnett County officials and companies will see how much we care for a vast issue in the world.

 Step 17. As the school of tomorrow, GGC will be leading the way in new innovative ideas for older institutions to follow.
