Summary
Assessment refers to the act of collecting information and making judgments
about a language learner’s knowledge of a language and ability to use it. Some people
consider testing and assessment are synonym, but assessment has border range than
test such as observation, journals and portfolios. In language programmes, Broadfoot
identifies a number of assessment purposes: assessment for curriculum, assessment
for communication and assessment for acountavility. Assessment purpose is closely
tied to the stakes and in high stakes situations the results of assessment may have a
significant effect on test-takers lives. The ideal of involvement need to be balanced
against the realities of implementation and the need for tests and assessments to
demonstrate acceptable levels of validity and reliability.
Comment
By reading this article I finally understand the difference between testing an
assessment. The range of testing is smaller than assessment such as a test on the class
and assessment is like a interview or a portfolio. I also learn that it’s very hard to find
a balance between the realities and the needs of the test and other factors.
