COLLIN COLLEGE COURSE SYLLABUS Course Information Course Number: DANC 1223 Course Title: Hip Hop II Course Description: Hip Hop II is a continuation of hip hop I. Further exploration of movement material as it relates to the historical, socio-economic, and musical/aesthetic contexts from which hip hop dance emerged. Lab required. Course Credit Hours: Lecture Hours: Lab Hours: 2 1 2 Prerequisite: DANC 1222 Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to do the following: 1. Further develop communication skills through an understanding of the multifaceted role dance may play in youth, visual and hip-hop cultures contexts – analysis of how dance/movement is a vehicle for communication in each instance. 2. Research a dance or aspects of popular, visual or hip-hop culture as it relates to personal interest research topic and produce a written research project that reflects critical thinking about the subject. 3. Further explore dance and music as artistic undertakings with the aesthetic of hip-hop culture. 4. Exhibit a kinesthetic and intellectual awareness of the various dance elements and how they are utilized in choreography to communicate and convey different messages and intentions. 5. Demonstrate critical thinking about the aesthetic principles identified through the various art forms of hip-hop culture through the following activities: class discussions about reading assignments, class discussions about video viewing of dance, research and writing skills. 6. Participation in movement investigations. 7. Develop critical thinking through one’s own personal aesthetic through creative activities that are assigned throughout the semester, and write an educated commentary about hip-hop and popular culture.
