COURSE OBJECTIVES
ITNW 1321: INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKING (3:3-1)
PREREQUISITE: Competency in desktop operating systems and basic computer applications.
Lab required.
DESCRIPTION: Introduction to the fundamentals, basic concepts, and terminology of
networks. Topics include the access and use of the Internet and networking hardware and
software, including current developments in networking.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: The student will describe various network topologies
and network operating systems: access and use network services; identify hardware and software
network components and their functionality; and explain public and private communication
infrastructures.
REQUIREMENTS: Evaluation of specific teleprocessing systems with respect to cost
comparison, effectiveness, specification requirements, and additional benefits. Brief individual
written and oral presentation of details of certain aspects of a data communications topic.
OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:
I. INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATIONS
Explain the overview of communications

Demonstrate the knowledge of fundamentals of communications
II. HARDWARE, MEDIA, AND EQUIPMENT
Discuss communications hardware
Explain the different types of Communication Channels
Explain how Modulators/Demodulators (Modems) function
Discus the different types of communications media
Explain the different business communications services
Know the data transmission codes and protocols
Recognize the different network configurations
III. INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS
List the 7 layers of the OSI Model and define each layer.
Distinguish between Local Area Networks (LANs), Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs), and
Wide Area Networks (WANs)
Define how a distributed network functions
Explain how the Internet works
Be familiar with E-Business Applications and the Business Data Communications Industry
IV. NETWORK MANAGEMENT
List the objectives of Network Management
Discuss Network Security
V. NETWORK SECURITY, MANAGEMENT, AND CHALLENGES
Know the difference between Physical Security and Software Security
List the Monitoring Tools used to better manage a computer network
